Biography

Welcome to a magical world populated by the usual fantasy fare: elves and ogres, wizards and witches, dwarves and trolls. But wait—is that witch wielding a frying pan rather than a broomstick? Has that wizard just clumsily tumbled off the edge of the world? And what is with the dwarf they call Carrot, who just so happens to stand six-foot six-inches tall? Why, this is not the usual fantasy fare at all—this is Terry Pratchett's delightfully twisted Discworld!

Beloved British writer Pratchett first jump-started his career while working as a journalist for Bucks Free Press during the '60s. As luck would have it, one of his assignments was an interview with Peter Bander van Duren, a representative of a small press called Colin Smythe Limited. Pratchett took advantage of his meeting with Bander van Duren to pitch a weird story about a battle set in the pile of a frayed carpet. Bander van Duren bit, and in 1971 Pratchett's very first novel, The Carpet People, was published, setting the tone for a career characterized by wacky flights of fancy and sly humor.

Pratchett's take on fantasy fiction is quite unlike that of anyone else working in the genre. The kinds of sword-and-dragon tales popularized by fellow Brits like J.R.R. Tolkein and C. S. Lewis have traditionally been characterized by their extreme self-seriousness. However, Pratchett has retooled Middle Earth and Narnia with gleeful goofiness, using his Discworld as a means to poke fun at fantasy. As Pratchett explained to Locus Magazine, "Discworld started as an antidote to bad fantasy, because there was a big explosion of fantasy in the late '70s, an awful lot of it was highly derivative, and people weren't bringing new things to it."

In 1983, Pratchett unveiled Discworld with The Color of Magic. Since then, he has added installments to the absurdly hilarious saga at the average rate of one book per year. Influenced by moderately current affairs, he has often used the series to subtly satirize aspects of the real world; the results have inspired critics to rapturous praise. ("The most breathtaking display of comic invention since PG Wodehouse," raved The Times of London.) He occasionally ventures outside the series with standalone novels like the Johnny Maxwell Trilogy, a sci fi adventure sequence for young readers, or Good Omens, his bestselling collaboration with graphic novelist Neil Gaiman.

Sadly, in 2008 fans received the devastating news that Pratchett had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. He has described his own reaction as "fairly philosophical" and says he plans to continue writing so long as he is able.

Pratchett's bestselling young adult novel Only You Can Save Mankind was adapted for the British stage as a critically acclaimed musical in 2004.

Discworld is not just the subject of a bestselling series of novels. It has also inspired a series of computer games in which players play the role of the hapless wizard Rincewind.

Chapter One

This is where the dragons went.

They lie...

Not dead, not asleep. Not waiting, because waiting implies expectation. Possibly the word we're looking for here is...

...dormant.

And although the space they occupy isn't like normal space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. Not a cubic inch there but is filled by a claw, a talon, a scale, the tip of a tail, so the effect is like one of those trick drawings and your eyeballs eventually realize that the space between each dragon is, in fact, another dragon.

They could put you in mind of a can of sardines, if you thought sardines were huge and scaly and proud and arrogant.

And presumably, somewhere, there's the key.

    Read this first

    This is probably the best first stop if you want to jump into the discworld. It is also the beginning of the watch of Anhk-morpork story lines. A great must read.

    Interesting

    It's a great book. My only complaint is that on the nook, some of the words get cut off and you can't access the footnotes.

    A definite "must read"

    This is definitely the book to get your feet wet if you've not read Terry Pratchett. He really hit his comic stride in Guards! Guards!. If you've not read him, pick this book up right away!

    My odd sense of humor...

    Not what I was expecting, and definately NOT my usual type of book....turned out to be pretty good and funny in this offhand sorta way...like dorky jokes like I would make myself!

    JUST WOAH! Extremely entertaining! You have been warned...

    I'm new to this Discworld Series and I have to say this is phenomenal, very clever, superb, and downright FUNNY. I'm lookin' forward to the next books and nothing's is gonna stop meh

    Very entertaining

    Here there be dragons, indeed, but also, more importantly, here there be HUMOR. This book is great. It has everything you could want: an excellently intricate plot, a surprise ending, a sketchy bad guy, a bunch of goons, endearing main characters, a six-foot-tall incredibly naive dwarf, and a really sweet romance, however quirky it may be. Pratchett's acute wordplay and descriptions are a pleasure to read, even if you have no idea what's going on in the story. Which may happen. Just go with the flow. I really enjoyed the core characters in this book, which is the four members of Anhk Morpork's police force and a rather large and interesting noblewoman who breeds a small species of dragons, especially Capt. Samuel Vimes, who begins this novel lying drunk in a gutter. What can I say, he made me laugh. The whole book made me laugh. This book is worth an exploration through the deep, dark depths of L-space to read. (If you want to know what L-space is, read the book.)

    I loved this book!

    This was the Third book by Terry Pratchett that I have read. Ever since I have read the first one, I just want to keep reading more! Very funny and very well written!

    My Favorite Book!

    When I first picked this book up I couldn't put it down! I laughed at the hilarious antics of the Night Watch and how they saved the city. A Great Laugh if you're a fan of Pratchett or just beginning to read his books. I definetly reccomend it. Once you read it you'll be hooked on Pratchett.
