Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kathleen M. Cizek, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This third edition provides the primary care practitioner with a complete and practical reference to the immunization needs of adults. The distinguished contributors comprise the Task Force on Adult Immunization.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a useful reference for adult immunization requirements. This is a very important area because inadequate vaccination is responsible for many otherwise preventable adult deaths. This book meets its objectives.
Audience: This guide is directed toward the primary care provider. Although a resident should be aware of the fundamentals of the text, it would be most useful to the general internist and family practitioner. There are multiple authors of distinguished background.
Features: This book includes a very comprehensive appendix. It describes recommended adult vaccination schedules and state requirements, for example. It also includes a very helpful, vast bibliography.
Assessment: This handbook would be especially helpful to the primary care physician. It is very specialized, but it is a much needed reference. This text supplies the necessary details of immunization (scheduling, precautions, side effects) that are critical, because inadequate vaccinations may indirectly lead to significant morbidity and mortality in the adult population.
