Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: James G Douglas, MD, MS (Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County)
Description: This is a concise guide to radiological definitions of lymph node groups for radiation treatment planning.
Purpose: The stated goal is to provide radiation oncologists with guidelines for identifying and defining lymph node structures that need to be included in treatment planning. The book succeeds in this worthwhile undertaking.
Audience: The primary audience is radiation oncologists at all stages of their careers. Residents and students should find this a very helpful anatomical guide. The authors are well known in radiation oncology and/or radiology.
Features: The initial section is devoted to a description of the general anatomic considerations of lymph node anatomy, classification, and anatomic radiological boundaries of lymph node groupings. The second section delves into modern definitions of target volume delineation and its importance for treatment planning. The third section is the most important part of this book, covering the anatomic, axial CT radiological anatomy of the head and neck, mediastinum, upper abdomen, and pelvic lymph nodes. The CT figures are excellent, as is the use of color coding to delineate the various lymph node regions in each area.
Assessment: This is a useful guide for the lymph node anatomy of the major disease site regions. Although there are many other anatomic guides in purely anatomic texts, this one is concise and thus is a fairly good reference tool.
