Dating is difficult for everyone. For a teen with Asperger Syndrome, it can be overwhelming. Special education teacher Jeannie Uhlenkamp tackles some of the specific issues facing teens with AS. Written in a question-and-answer format, this much-needed book offers insight and practical advice on dating challenges. Each topic is followed by Discussion Questions (to get the conversation flowing between teens and parents/teachers) and a Main Idea (which succinctly wraps up the main point). Also included are special notes to define the more illusive vocabulary and concepts of today's dating world.

Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Dating can be a scary time for any teen. Girls wonder if they will be asked out. Guys may want to know the best way to ask a girl for a date. Teens may be unsure of what to do on a date, how the other person will react, will they be liked, what to say, and many other aspects of dating. Now add to these concerns, the element of having asperger syndrome (AS), which will make dating even more difficult. Teens with AS have the same worries as other teens but also have other concerns relating to AS. For example, what about sensory issues like too much light, noise, and different smells on a date? Or how about starting a conversation with someone? What about anger issues when someone is annoying or upsetting and trying to handle that anger? The answers to these kinds of questions are in this very practical book. The interesting format is a question and answer format with a teen asking a dating question and the answer giving them advice on each situation. In addition, discussion questions are included after each answer for teens to think about. There is a main idea section that summarizes what is said and a note section that explains words in a more concrete manor to help the teen with AS to understand. The author has made this dating guide informative, interesting, and useful to any teen with AS to help them to know more about dating and to encourage them with any anxieties they may have. Furthermore, there are additional book and website resources included at the end of the book. This book would be excellent for any teen to read, as well as parents to discuss with their teens who are dating. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
