Overview

Accordionist Guido Deiro was a star of American vaudeville, beginning in the 1910s until the scene dwindled with the arrival of sound films. He was a man of expensive tastes, and he didn't take it well as he descended into poverty. At one point he asked for help from Mae West, with whom he certainly had a relationship and to whom he may have been married. West's biographers disagree on this point, but she had this to say: "The sex thing was terrific with this guy. I wanted to do it morning, noon, and night, and that's all I wanted to do." At any rate, historical label Archeophone, with headquarters in Champaign, Ill., has issued an extensively documented series of albums featuring Deiro's recordings that is surprisingly numerous, considering his near-total obscurity. This one is the fourth and final release in the series, covering recordings made during the 1920s and straddling the division between acoustic and electrical technology. The music is of a piece with that on the previous discs, although he seems to have gradually reduced his performances of adapted classical showpieces and relied more on original compositions and performances of popular songs. These are less obviously virtuosic but often develop their themes in very inventive and skillful ways, suggesting the addition of improvised counterpoint. The instrument Deiro played was dubbed (perhaps by Deiro himself) a piano accordion; it has both buttons and a full keyboard. This disc might have applications for theatrical collections, and it's a necessary addition to collections dealing with vaudeville; it's also enjoyable for anyone who enjoys accordion music.
