Overview

The acute inflammatory polyneuropathy Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) has been recognized under different names for more than 100 years. The widely accepted syndromic eponym has persisted because the illness is easy to identify from clinical features delineated in a seminal report in 1916. The details in this book are based on years of observation and care delivered personally to over more than 250 patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome from 1979 to 1988.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Clinicians draw on their personal experience and the medical literature to provide a comprehensive view of Guillain-Barre syndrome. The background section covers the history, diagnostic criteria, and epidemiology; other sections cover the neurobiological basis, clinical features, laboratory investigation and differential diagnosis, and treatment and rehabilitation. Especially noteworthy are the details of an approach to managing patients who need respiratory support, which has reduced mortality from 25% to 4% over the past couple decades. Annotation c.
