Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Anticipation of the inevitable provides the compelling hook in Sloan's solidly crafted debut, as readers wait for date-rape victim Karen Kern to turn the tables on her attacker. In 1962, the attractive collegian is brutally assaulted in N.Y.C.'s Central Park by a Harvard Law student she has just met at a Christmas party. Subsequently spurned by her fianc-and in a sense by police and her parents, who assume she provoked the assault-Karen slowly carves a professional niche for herself but shuns any romantic attachments. Sloan juxtaposes Karen's uneasy maturation during the ensuing 30 years with the professional triumphs and behind-the-scenes shenanigans of California political aspirant Robert Willmont, Karen's erstwhile rapist. Both story lines occasionally become weighted down by domestic melodrama, though Sloan's array of colorful and credible supporting characters-and her keen observations of the passing decades-generally overcome any hurdles. And, when her protagonists finally reconnect, any shortcomings are forgiven, as the book's final third rushes headlong towards a taut and thoroughly satisfying finale. 75,000 first printing; major ad/promo. This book very vividly reveals how it was 20 years ago, (and still is today for some), for the rape victim. The total denial and lack of empathy shown by the victim's family members and very closest friends creates for the reader a deep sense of sadness and anger for what this young woman encountered. It changed her life forever. The book gives the reader a great admiration for the courage and strength in this woman. Hopefully, there will be more books like this. It is a very affective way to educate the public on the extreme trauma of a rape; and if left untreated, the resulting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which can be so devestating for the victim. Hopefully, this book will increase the understanding of rape, particularly acquaintence rape. The public should know that today there is a lot of help available for victims. If they look in their telephone book, they will find Crisis Centers and Hot Line numbers in most areas. They can receive treatment if they want. There are trained advocates who will come to the hospital--again if the victim wants this. Victims do not have to receive these services. This is their choice. Because of the high risk of HIV, victims are encouraged to go to their local hospitals. They can call for help, and their confidentiality will be respected.

I read this book about four years ago. At the time I used to never read books. My wife gave the book to me and after a few chapters I could not put it down. A must read even if you do not read a great number of books.

She's one of the better writers I read and just sorry she doesn't write more. I've enjoyed everything she's written, especially Behind Closed Doors.

This book makes my second of her books that I have read. A decent page turner and downright heart wrenching at times for the main character. Goes to show that some people should not be parents.

I have not read a book like this in years. It's written very well and without a doubt a page turner. I am now reading her next book.

I am a new fan of Susan Sloan. Her style of writing is captivating. The climax is shocking and it felt good. That was the only way he would ever have been stopped from raping again. Susan Sloan is a new star on the horizon.

Susan R. Sloan is an amazing storyteller. It really is ashame she has not had any books out since 2004. The books I have read by her so far have not disappointed. They keep you on the edge of your seat and shock you right to the very last page. I have two more of her books to read yet. Hopefully, she will write a new one soon.
