Overview

Guinea, situated on Africa's west coast, is potentially one of the richest countries on the continent in terms of natural resources, yet the Guinean people remain among the poorest in the world. Despite possessing large reserves of bauxite as well as diamonds, iron ore and gold, industry remains undeveloped. Similarly, although the climatic and soil conditions are suitable for a wide range of agriculture, food production has not kept pace with population growth. This is the first annotated bibliography on Guinea to be published. Material has been included on all aspects of the country's history, economy, population, arts and literature.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
A helpful bibliographical reference for researchers exploring topics in the history, culture, and politics of Guinea, a resource rich country that remains undeveloped and poverty stricken. Many of the entries deal with Dekou Tour<'e>'s dictatorship from 1958 to 1984, although the volume also covers works on the ethnic groups of the country, its geography, flora and fauna, travelers' accounts, languages, and pre-colonial and colonial periods. About half of the entries appear in French editions, and the introduction provides helpful political perspectives that account for the limited information available about the country. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
