Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Ottmar Liebert started a musical revolution with his Nouveau Flamenco in 1990, and Guitar Greats samples some of the best of the new generation of guitarists who have followed his path. These artists have taken flamenco from the caves and cafes of Spain and made acquaintance with Latin styles and electronica. Often missing from this new flamenco is the hot, dry, sexy edge, the anger that almost rips the strings from the guitar. Missing also are the duende vocals which seem most often to protest the loss of love, the palmas clapping, and the indignant heels of dancers. The nouveau style keeps the fiery solo guitar technique and the strumming guitars on the side, but adds...

The nouveau style keeps the fiery solo guitar technique and the strumming guitars on the side, but adds Latin percussion, bass, and other modern instruments. Armik Dashchi's "Isla Del Sol" and Behzad Aghabeigi's "Gypsy Renaissance" bring the solo guitar line out front for dazzling displays of technique. Jesse Cook's "Parasol" is romantically languid, like a gentle warm rain, while NovaMenco's "Mediterranean Breeze" drives powerfully with the wind. Govi's "Treasure Bay" glows with a radiant innocence, while Luis Villegas's "Spider Hugs" grabs tight, trumpet-accentuated samba rhythms. Also included are the Latin-tinged "Jardin" by Strunz & Farah, the natural flamenco sound and palmas of Oscar Lopez's "The Flavor," the Lawson Rollins and Dan Young "Scorpion" capturing the flavor of a live performance, and Sergio Lara's "El Castillo," with tangy harmonies for two guitars. And what nouveau flamenco compilation could be complete without Ottmar Liebert? His signature tune, the trendsetting "Barcelona Nights," is included.
All Music Guide - Steve Huey
"New flamenco" isn't so much a revival of flamenco tradition as it is a melding of flamenco guitar with new age musical sensibilities. That means that while it's still passionate and rhythmic, new flamenco is also a bit more polished and controlled, especially in terms of production. Its primary audience overlaps with contemporary instrumental and adult alternative listeners. Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco is an excellent introduction to the style, featuring many of its biggest names: Ottmar Liebert, Strunz & Farah, Jesse Cook, Govi, Young & Rollins, Lara & Reyes, and more. Some of the artists incorporate non-flamenco ethnic music into their compositions, while others lend a more meditative air to their still-emotional playing. Eclectic adult listeners may discover a new favorite style here.
