Overview

Based in Mobile, Alabama, the independent Sandy label recorded a bunch of rockabilly/early rock sides in the late '50s, though none of the acts on this 24-song compilation had anything close to a national smash. It's solid, often crudely recorded (in the positive sense of that description) material, perhaps with more of a honky-tonk/swamp flavor than the average rockabilly collection. The highlight may be Jackie Morningstar's "Rockin' in the Graveyard," one of the better overlooked early rock'n'horror novelties. Ray Sawyer, later to lead Dr. Hook, appears here under his own name on a couple of respectably rockin' early-'60s singles.
