Overview

This simple retelling of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels focuses on the first voyage—Gulliver's time on the island of Lilliput. It is a great way to introduce newly independent readers to this classic adventure.
Gulliver loves the life he's leading. As a doctor on a ship he travels to some very interesting places. But life at sea can be dangerous, too. Gulliver's ship is destroyed in a storm, and it takes every bit of his strength to swim to shore, where he falls asleep all alone. But he is not alone for long! Gulliver awakens to find himself being held captive on an island called Lilliput by people who are only six inches tall! Although they don't trust him at first, soon enough the Lilliputians see how handy it can be to have Gulliver around—at least some of the time. And Gulliver adds another exotic, exciting, and very funny adventure to his life experiences!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The full book Gulliver's Travels is quite long and not as popular today as it was at least a century ago. This digest version contains a simplified account of Gulliver's accidental arrival in the land of the Lilliputs. They are very tiny people and to them Guilliver is an immense man—a giant. At first he is treated as an enemy and kept chained to the ground. Eventually he becomes a friend and is fed and cared for by the people and becomes a sort of human playground, with people playing hide-and-seek-in his hair. He helps to avert a war and becomes a real hero. One day there is a fire in the palace and Gulliver is called upon to help put it out. His solution will have the boys rolling on the floor, but the queen was none too happy and as a result Gulliver lost favor and was forced to leave the land of Lilliput. Those who read this version may be inspired to learn more by tackling the whole book and following Gulliver's further adventures. This is a "Step into Reading" Level 3 book that could easily be used in a high low reading environment or a class teaching those beginning to learn English. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
