Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

In this debut, bathtime inspires a boy to imagine himself a sea captain worthy of Russell Crowe in full Master and Commander mode. Kay's text combines a rollicking, operatic narrative ("The storms would rage,/ the waves would swell./ 'Man the ropes!' young Snip would yell") with an infectious refrain ("in the clipper ship/ that his mother called the bathtub"). It's "Blow the Man Down" meets "The Mulberry Bush." As an illustrator, Kay makes some intriguing color choices; working in pastels and acrylics, she renders the sea as thick lime green with purple swells and glints of blood orange. But while there's significant promise in these pages, there's also lack of polish. The meter often runs aground, and Gulliver can look wooden. Just short of first-class. Ages 4-7. (June)

Children's Literature
Author/illustrator Julia Kay has created an inventive bedtime book using a narrative structure very reminiscent of the classic children's story, The House that Jack Built. In this case, the adventure begins with a "clipper ship that his mother called a bathtub." What follows is a jaunty tale of jolly good fun on the high seas of a young boy's imagination. The text features plenty of internal rhymes and bouncy rhythms as the young boy in question, Gulliver Snip, navigates bath time and bedtime routines in a most inventive way. Tandem stories are told in the illustrations—we see Gulliver the boy in his house, acting out the nautical adventures he imagines on one side of the double-page spread, and on the other, we see Gulliver the sailor and explorer dashing about in vividly-rendered settings. All goes well for both Gullivers until reality comes crashing down (literally), and Mom comes to the rescue. After a hug and a clean-up, tucking-in happily follows, which leads to dreams of…what else? A very versatile bathtub boat! Kids and grownups will enjoy the imaginative fun in this delightful hardcover picture book, particularly at bedtime. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

PreS-Gr 2

A little boy whose imagination is bigger than his bath-time ritual has a sailing adventure on the high seas without ever leaving his home. Every night, Captain Gulliver Snip takes a trip "in his wonderful clipper ship/that his mother called the bathtub." This catchy phrase becomes a refrain for the rhyming text. On each spread, a full-bleed painting on the verso depicts the boy's pretend activities, contrasting with a smaller, more-realistic-looking, bordered image on the right that shows him playing in the tub. Readers follow the captain through harrowing escapades as he braves a surging wave (falls out of an overflowing tub), floats toward land in his packing trunk (leaves the bathroom and rides downstairs on a suitcase), and climbs a coconut tree (a floor lamp). The resulting crash summons his mother, and reality sets in as she asks, "'Gulliver Snip, did you make this mess?'/And Snip, feeling sorry, with a sigh, said, 'Yes.'" The illustrations, done in acrylic and pastel, colorfully and creatively delineate both the real and imaginary worlds. Children will find the red-headed Gulliver a creative soul who can turn a nighttime routine into a swashbuckling tale, making this book a fun choice for bedtime sharing.-Susannah Richards, Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, CT

Kirkus Reviews
The dedication in Kay's imaginative debut says it all: "For those who take adventures instead of taking baths." Each night, instead of bathing, Gulliver Snip takes "a trip in his wonderful clipper ship / that his mother called the bathtub." On this particular trip, he faces a storm, a sinking ship, a ride through a cave in a packing trunk, an island landing and getting treed by a tiger. Full-bleed left-hand-page illustrations show readers what Gulliver Snip imagines-the wooden ship, foamy green waves and his captain's uniform. Meanwhile, smaller gray-toned illustrations above the text perfectly capture the reality-Gulliver bailing water out of the tub, bumping down the stairs in a suitcase and climbing his mother's lamp. It is here that his mother finally discovers his escapades and trundles him off to bed to dream of his next adventure. While Gulliver's creativity is to be applauded, parents may find it unfortunate that there are no consequences for his destructive actions. Still, a nice foray into the realm of imagination. I wish I was young again to have my own Gulliver Snip reading time!

Gulliver Snip is an incredibly creative, well written, and beautifully illustrated children's book. The story crosses the daily topic of a bathing child with a creative blast of adventure on the high seas, as Gulliver sees his bathtub as a clipper ship, sailing the oceans blue. The book makes you laugh, smile, and want to read it over and over. In fact, I wish I was a kid again so I could play the role of Gulliver, creating adventure from the ordinary, having a blast with what is seen as normal from an adult's perspective. (Oh, to be young and innocent again...this whole working world and responsibility is not all it cracked up to be.) The sound and repetition of the writing in the book is harmonious and very catchy, a brilliantly worded story indeed. And I just can't get over some of the illustrations, how deep the rich the color is, and the juxtaposition of the actual bath tub experience with the creative adventures of the mind that Gulliver travels are just a pleasure to watch unfold side by side. Julia Kay has put together a real winner with her first children's book here, and I can see her heart and soul and people close to her in this book. And who wouldn't just get attached to a little red headed boy who is adventurous?!?!?! I have purchased 20 copies of this book and my mother and I are giving it to all of our friends with children and to their grandparents as well. Every family with a child should have a copy of Gulliver Snip. Trust me, you will enjoy the ride and have great reading time with your little ones!

    Colourful, Creative, and Cute

Well rhymed (not like some children's book authors), wounderful pictures that bring the story to life, and a fun and silly plot. It helps children imagine and really is an adorable book.

Beautiful artwork--clever rhymes--fun adventure. Great for children, yet able to bring a smile even out of adults. This book is, simply put, a treasure!!!!

I laughed myself into stitches, sewed myself up, and then read it again.

A hilarious rhyming adventure remnicent of the works of Shel Silverstein and Roald Dahl. Kay is a brilliant new addition to the children's publishing world.

    Imaginative and Colorful

This is such a refreshing new book. I so often take my daughter to the book store and am sadly disappointed by the poorly mismatched rhymes and boring pictures that don't hold her interest. Gulliver Snip has fun and imaginative pictures that get my little girl talking and pointing. I will definitely be looking for Kay's future books!

Put on your kid-spectacles 'cause Gulliver will take you for a ride!

I am mesmerized by the witty lyrical style writing and the playful illustration of Gulliver Snip and the Clipper Ship. I can see it easily evolving into a animated feature, with it's Seussical rhythm and delight. Thanks for a fine addition to any children's library!

    What an adorable book!

This sweet book has clever upbeat rhyme and beautiful artwork. The author has completely captured the imagination of a small boy who longs to be captain of a clipper ship. Highly recommended as a read-aloud for pre-k to 3rd grade.
