VOYA - Beth H. Green
The Hot Topics series focuses on a variety of controversial topics that are prominent issues in today's society. Each volume begins with the same foreword, one that helpfully informs the reader about the massive amount of information that today's young people are exposed to, from traditional sources such as newspapers and television to electronic media, and how the series is designed to help students sift through the massive amounts of information, and form their own opinions on a particular topic. MacKay's Gun Control, might be the most controversial of all the books in this series, especially with the ever-increasing occurrences of gun violence in the United States today. As in the other volumes, historical background begins the look at guns in America. Students are given a great bit of information about the historical significance of firearms, from their early beginnings to today's debate to either allow or restrict gun ownership in private citizenship. Those who are researching topics that lend themselves to "pro versus con" discussions will greatly benefit from the series, especially since each volume gives further readings, questions for further discussion from each chapter, and, as a wonderful addition, contact information for various organizations that are closely linked to the topic at hand. The Hot Topics series is a great addition for any school library, as well as those libraries that serve teen populations. (Hot Topics) Reviewer: Beth H. Green
