Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
The debate over gun control legislation in the United States has evolved to become one of the most polarizing social issues imaginable. On one side, advocates of gun control point to horrific mass shooting events and data that indicate that since 1968 more Americans have died in gun-related crimes than in all of the nation’s wars combined. Opponents of gun control point toward constitutional protections, threats to individual freedom, and the general inefficiency of current gun control legislation. It is this bitter debate that writer Steven Otfinoski tackles in this selection from the “Cornerstones of Freedom” series. In telling the opposing stories in the gun control debate, Otfinoski does an excellent job of sharing both the historical roots and cornerstone events that have helped shape the discussion. The end result of these events has been ongoing anguish and frustration as government initiatives go nowhere and gun-related deaths escalate. A particularly moving portion of this book revolves around the author’s handling of the tragic December 2012 school invasion in Newton, Connecticut that resulted in the deaths of twenty-six children and educators as well as the shooter. That terrible event led to a heightened national debate but no new legislation. In this well-written and thoughtful book, Steven Otfinoski does justice to an issue that dogs American society and persists in dividing people on opposing sides of a life and death issue. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck; Ages 10 up.
