Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
This volume from the "Gun Education and Safety" series presents a great deal of factual information in 32 pages while maintaining a balanced view of the subject. Opening with a short vignette in which a petitioner appears at the front door seeking support for an a open carry law, the book then moves into several short chapters detailing the chronological history of gun laws in America. This includes information on the Second Amendment, the National Firearms Act and the Brady Law. A few landmark court cases are detailed followed by a very brief discussion of other countries' gun laws. The final chapters discuss the difference in state laws and present a discussion of the debate over gun laws in the United States. Both the NRA and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence are mentioned. Included are a table of contents, index, glossary and the suggestion to go to www.abdopublishing.com for current links on the subject. A trip to the website provides links to a children's health website article on what to do if a classmate brings a gun to school, the Bill of Rights, Brady Campaign (referred to in the book as the Brady Center) and a dead link to the NRA website. The author is careful to present information in a factual manner and maintains a neutral tone throughout. Much information is presented despite the short length of the book, which may cause some confusion between the picture book style and significantly higher reading and content levels. Overall this is a good additional purchase if your curriculum includes study about gun laws, but not a necessary purchase. It may have more usability for a public library collection, particularly if your community has an ongoing gun law debate. Reviewer: Sharon Oliver
