Tea for Two

“Dixon was known for his philanthropy?” asked Theodosia.

“And for being an all-around good guy,” replied Detective Tidwell. He smiled at her, then helped himself to an almond scone. “Lovely,” he muttered under his breath.

He’s not given me an ounce of useful information, thought Theodosia. She sighed. Conversations with Tidwell were always of the cat-and-mouse variety.

“You realize,” she began, “there is a long-standing feud between the Dixons and the Cantrells.” She watched him as her words sank in. He gave her nothing.

“The feud began back in the 1880s,” she said. “The heads of the two families fought a duel to the death.”

“Mm hmmm.” Tidwell took another bite from his pastry, but Theodosia knew she had his attention. She seized the moment.

“Do you know much about antique pistols?”

    Great Saturday Afternoon Book

This is the first book I read by this author. It was such an easy and interesting read that I read it in one sitting. Never once did this book drag on, which I haven't been able to say about a book in a very long time. If you enjoyed the show, Murder She Wrote, then you will enjoy this book. I thought the recipes at the end were a wonderful touch. I can't wait for the next one.

Good concept and plot, but -

I can't put down a good mystery and I love a good cup of tea, so Gunpowder Green seemed like the perfect choice. While Laura Childs has plotted a good story, its delivery turned out to be a bit disappointing. She appears to have done her research, but in sharing so much detail the mystery sometimes take second place to tea and Charleston. Much more distracting is the author's tendency to 'head hop' - one moment you're in her sleuth's head puzzling out the mystery and the next seeing through the eyes of the police detective or her tea shop employees or the various suspects or even from the point of view of one-scene no-name tea shop customers (often switching from viewpoint to viewpoint within the same scene). It seems the only character whose thoughts and impressions we aren't privy to are those of Theodosia's dog, Earl Grey. Unfortunately, this proved to be a major distraction from page 1 through the end of what would have been an excellent book if more focused.

    I Also Recommend:

Laura Childs Tea Shop Mystery Series/#2 Gunpowder Green

These are delightful little mysteries that are an easy read and have some wonderful recipes at the end! The main characters are likable and you can easily put famous names with them if they ever decide to make Lifetime Movies of the series. I would have to say the best character is the city of Charleston, South Carolina where the stories take place. I have never been to Charleston but have plans to go in the near future! Ms. Childs does have one annoying habit - she CONSTANTLY uses first and last names of characters, which makes me think that she thinks her readers are senile or stupid! It is something I hope she corrects in future volumes. Maybe she is getting paid by the word... Other than that, I find these stories a pleasant way to spend a little time.

    A light, entertaining, cozy read!

Being a frequent visitor to Charleston, I feel I am right there inside the tea shop as the story unfolds. The dialogue is fun, the mystery keeps you guessing, and the unique style of Charleston is on every page. Great characters, great plots! Can't wait for the next book!

    Great series

I love these. All the tea lore and descriptions are great. Theodosia is a charming personality and Hayley and Drayton are perfect complements. Also the descriptions of Charleston are lovely. This story involves a stolen wedding ring - a family heirloom from Savannah. Theo suspects a cat burglar.

    Recommended for cozy mystery lovers

Theodosia Browning's life has calmed down since almost being killed a few months ago. Bethany has moved on but Drayton and Haley are still working for her at the Indigo Tea Shop and she has hired Miss Dimple to do her books a couple of days a week. They are planning several different types of tea parties including a Mystery Tea Party to increase business.

This murder takes place at White Point Gardens at the tip of Charleston's historic peninsula during the Isle of Palms Yacht Race. Oliver Dixon, along with his much younger wife of about two months, Doe Belvedere-Dixon were there and as Oliver shot the antique pistol when the winner crossed the line, he went down. He fell right on one of Theodosia's white table cloths. And so the sleuthing begins. I will say there are many persons of interest and that there is definetely only one guilty person, but three people are arrested, you figure it out.

I got more interested in this book than the first one and think I will probably get hooked on cozy mystery's. I think I'm comparing them to Nancy Drew and Bobbsey Twin books that I read when I was younger, and that was a LONG time ago, and I would actually get scared as I was reading them sometimes. Now that I'm older I guess I don't 'scare' quite as easily. I think that I will still give this one an average review, the story was a little more captivating for me but I'm not quite all the way hooked yet. I will keep reading cozy's though.

    Love This Series!

I ran across this series while reading a blog on cozy mysteries. I started with the first one and read the first three one after the other. The characters are very well written and the plots are realistic. I love book set in the south and this one does not disappoint being set in the lovely old city of Charleston. I've also learned about the world of tea that I knew very little about. Sadly, all of the books have not yet been converted to Nook format yet so I was stuck after the first few. I wrote to the author and she assures me she's working on the editors to get the rest of the series converted. I'm keeping an eye out for that.

    Excellent Location Mystery

I love the city of Charleston, and this particular series keeps me coming back for more with the streets and popular locations mentioned.

    Another winner!

As the plot twists and unwinds, you'll find yourself stepping into our heroine's shoes and finding out 'who dun it!' This one is just as exciting as the first. Get it, get a cup of tea and enjoy.
