Overview

Children love reading with Gus and Grandpa

Gus and Grandpa love to answer mail. Shortly after they enter the lottery, Grandpa has a heart attack. Gus is afraid to visit the hospital, but as soon as he arrives, Grandpa makes him feel right at home. Grandpa teaches Gus how to raise and lower the bed, and gives him quarters for the soda machine. Still, Gus is eager to have Grandpa back where he belongs. Then Grandpa does go home. There's lots of mail, but no lottery prize. No matter, says Grandpa; being with his family again is better than ten million dollars. Gus agrees wholeheartedly. Once again, in gentle words and pictures, Claudia Mills and Catherine Stock celebrate an invaluable relationship.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Grandpa suffers a heart attack and is admitted to the hospital. It is a scary place, particularly since he has a tube in his arm and in his nose. Nevertheless, he knows just what to do and say to put his grandson at ease...A realistic yet reassuring and loving look at a relative's illness."-School Library Journal

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Gus and Grandpa enjoy spending time together, and they love opening the mail every day. Life seems to be quite predictable until Grandpa doesn't feel well. He has a mild stroke and ends up in the hospital. It is scary for Gus to go and visit Grandpa there, and he longs for Grandpa's return home. While Grandpa is getting better, Mom Dad and Gus take care of his mail, dog, and garden. The love they all feel for each other comes through in this warm family story, that manages to poke fun at junk mail and all of the contests promising to make those who enter millionaires. As in the other books in the series, Catherine Stocks watercolors show real people in believable scenes.

K-Gr 3-The warm, caring relationship between Gus and his grandfather continues in this fourth book as Grandpa suffers a heart attack and is admitted to the hospital. It is a scary place, particularly since he has a tube in his arm and in his nose. Nevertheless, he knows just what to do and say to put his grandson at ease. Beginning readers will empathize with Gus and rejoice in the satisfying ending in which Grandpa comes home. Soft watercolor wash-and-line drawings complement the well-written text. A realistic yet reassuring and loving look at a relative's illness.-Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA
