Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Lots of kids like the idea of sleeping in a tent, even if it is only in their backyard. Gus is no different. He enjoys the adventure of sleeping outdoors. Once he gets his tent, he does not want to leave it. He eats his lunch there, brings out his toys, and decides that he is going to spend the night. Both his parents remark on how brave Gus is to spend the night outside in his tent. However, he does get scared when and owl starts to hoot. So Dad is invited to join Gus in the tent. Gus is still scared; even though Dad is fast asleep beside him, he heads into the house to join Mom. Imagine Dad's surprise when he awakes in the morning to find that he is all alone. The story is easily understood through both the text and the pictures, so emergent readers should be able to decode this story and achieve reading success. This is a pre-level 1 First Reader in the "Scholastic Readers" series, featuring stories of 30 to 100 words. The back cover explains the series and also includes lexile and guided reading information. This is a guided reading level G book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

    Message a bit disappointing

I purchased this book for my son, Gus, because he is beginning to tell us he is afraid of things. I was hoping the book's message would be, "there's nothing to be afraid of in the dark." Instead, the Gus in the book doesn't learn any lesson. He just gets scared and goes inside. Had I known that prior, I would never have purchased it.
