Overview

Gustav Klimt is certainly the most famous artist to have emerged from fin-de-siècle Vienna. His technique—combining decorative form with flat pattern to build exotic and voluptuous images—has never been repeated but has informed generations of painters since.

This book includes many of Klimt’s most storied and important works, from his breakthrough portrait of Sonja Knips to the magnificent paintings from his “gold” period, which printed here with gold and silver inks to convey accurately the enchanting intricacy of his surfaces.

Author Jane Kallir, co-director of the Galerie St. Etienne in New York City, provides an introduction, and authoritative commentaries for each painting that place the images in Klimt’s life and the societal and cultural environment of his time.

In the early twenty-first century, Klimt’s work ascended to new heights of desirability and value. In 2006, the 1907 portrait Adele Bloch-Bauer I was purchased by the Neue Galerie in New York and has attracted thousands of viewers intrigued by the painter’s history.

Readers, whether long fascinated by these seductive, gleaming, and sometimes ominous paintings or discovering them for the first time, will find Gustav Klimt: 25 Masterworks a superb distillation of his work.

A great initial view to Klimt

The images are glossy and very good quality but the content is limited.
