Overview

The longtime fiddler of Irish supergroup the Chieftains, Seán Keane takes a solo bow on Gusty's Frolicks. A master from Ireland's unsung mid-region, his playing is crisp, clear, and steadfastly workman-like. His years as a mentor to younger fiddlers are readily apparent in his straightforward yet quietly brilliant technique, one that calls more attention to the tune at hand than to the performer himself. At the same time, he makes the wildest musical figures seem so effortless that one almost forgets to be impressed. This is the real-deal, old-time stuff, and his playing bears the influence of not only his four-string forebears but that of the pipers he has known and listened to. Indeed, classics like "The Gold Ring" and "Strop the Razor" would probably be much easier to accomplish on the pipes, but then where would be all the fun and challenge? Keane's dazzling slides and fingerings do the trick nicely. Although nothing quite compares to the sound of wild applause by an enraptured audience in a local shebeen or ceilidh, Gusty's Frolicks is more than a reasonable substitute. This fiddler's album is truly a technical marvel and unquestionably worth a good many spins.
