All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Dispatch's Gut the Van is the inevitable two-CD live album from a jam band with several studio albums under its belt that makes its living on the road. The collection spans dates on the group's East Coast tour of the winter and spring of 2001 from Virginia to Massachusetts, the only exception being a 1996 take of "Steeples" from Middlebury College in Vermont. Dispatch is a hard-playing trio that makes the most of its three instruments and voices, sometimes taking the form of a classic power trio of electric guitar, electric bass, and drums, but just as often employing two acoustic guitars and congas. No matter the instrumentation, the music is groove-heavy, often set to a syncopated beat, the bandmembers singing the songs' elliptical lyrics in an approximation of a Jamaican patois. Reggae is a big influence, and so is rap, but so are earlier trios, particularly the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Police. In concert, Brad "Braddigan" Corrigan, Pete Heimbold, and Charlie Stokes emphasize group interaction, stretching out the songs in a way that emphasizes the rhythms and the music's emotional content over meaning. As such (and no surprise for a jam band), Gut the Van, which contains songs from all of the band's previous albums, makes a terrific introduction, and may be the record to break Dispatch beyond the fervent cult following that makes itself heard in the audience.

    Dispatch Owns!

Just recently I started getting into Dispatch, and I cannot get enough of them. I actually discovered them after a friend of mine wore a Dispatch t-shirt to school one day. I didn't think much of them, for I had never heard their music before. So, I legally downloaded some of their songs and left them on my computer for about a year before realizing they were there. After discovering them about two months ago, I havent been able to listen to anything else. They have such intresting musical talent and their unique style cannot be described. I recently picked up a copy of Gut the Van at a local CD shop when an old friend of mine was working there. When I asked him if he liked Dispatch he told me that they were one of his favorite bands. He told me that he could play GTV in the store while I shopped also, and that was when I realized that Dispatch was one of the best bands that ever played. It is such a shame that they broke up at such a good time in their musical career. I am still hoping, with about 4,324,286 people, that the band someday will reunite and play together again. I would recomend this band to anyone who doesnt mine upbeat music, because it is a band with such unique style and talent. DISPATCH FOREVER.

    Awesome!!

When my friend lent me this CD, he said 'You're going to play this and think, "What did he give me?!", but just listen to it! It's great'. He was exactly right, too - they're style is so different that it catches you off guard, but once you get into it and hear their raw, uncut talent, you're hooked! I can't get enough of them. :-)

    Gut The Van!

They say that you can judge the quality of a band by how they perform live. I just saw a live Dispatch show in Providence, RI last week and I must say that the energy in the 800 capacity club was intense. Dispatch can be compared to the likes of Dave Matthews, Sublime, and Barenaked Ladies all mixed into one unique style. I've seen many Dave Matthew's shows at sold out 50,000+ capacity stadiums. At the Dispatch show I got the same vibes in an 800 capacity club that I've gotten at 50,000+ Dave shows. Pick up ''Gut The Van'' it captures Dispatch's intense energy and deep lyrical content. These guys have an incredible amount of talent and are on the verge of making it big. Pick up ''Gut the Van''!
