Barnes & Noble - Martine Bury
The sound of R&B as we know it today owes nearly every distinction to the guys in Guy -- Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Damion Hall. That's everything, from K-Ci & JoJo to the Backstreet Boys. Returning after an almost ten-year absence since THE FUTURE, Riley has dubbed this third collaboration of golden voices and funky beats not a reunion or a comeback but a "homecoming" -- an attempt, it seems, to corral R&B's current identity problem and reinstate the supremacy of New Jack Swing as the modern foundation of soul. Tracks like "Do It" and "Dancin' " will no doubt move folks to the dance floor, making a strong argument for the cause, while the smooth ...

Tracks like "Do It" and "Dancin' " will no doubt move folks to the dance floor, making a strong argument for the cause, while the smooth instrumentation and buttery vocals on "We're Coming" and "Why You Wanna Keep Me from My Baby" testify to the righteousness of Guy's mission. In its best moments, III holds its own in a world of contemporary hip-hop and R&B, despite a few obvious attempts to keep up with the times see "Love on Line," which incorporates the sound of fingers hitting a computer keyboard and the eerie AOL "You've got mail. . ." intro. Still, "Teddy's Jam 3," a live incarnation of the trio's signature classic, works both as a timely revival for those who remember when "Groove Me" and "Don't Clap...Just Dance" ruled the dance floor and as the perfect lesson for schooling neophytes to New Jack in all its glory.
All Music Guide - Keith Farley
More than ten years after their sophomore album -- titled, ironically, Future -- appeared to draw the curtain on urban forerunners Guy, Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Damion Hall came back for their third album. In the interim, both Hall brothers released solo albums, and Riley continued his hit-making success by producing Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and SWV among others, and by appearing in yet another superstar group, Blackstreet. After Blackstreet's third album Finally failed to chart as high as its predecessor, Riley and the Halls re-formed. Guy was always more than just an above-average soul group, and though Riley's production schedule slowed slightly during the late '90s, he was still one of the biggest names in contemporary R&B. Guy III equals the extraordinary expectations that any new material from Guy provokes, occasionally exceeding their work in the past.
