Patti Lupone is GOD! Or rather, GODDESS!!! Lupone can do no wrong in her turn as Momma Rose! This is the role LuPone was truly BORN TO PLAY on BROADWAY! Of course there have been other memorable Momma Roses through the years. Some great, others merely adequate (or in the case of the most recent Broadway turn prior to this one barely passing!). But there has NEVER been a Momma Rose like Patti LuPone's Momma Rose! LuPone stacks so many layers upon layers of nuance and deeply developed rich character traits into this walloping incarnation as Momma Rose that it is difficult to imagine any other actor portraying this role either before or aftr LuPone! Even the great Ethel Merman, for whom the part was custom tailored nearly 50 years ago, couldn't hold a candle to LuPone as she tears down the scenery, chews it up, spits it out, and then chews it up again! So much has been said and written about LuPone in this once-in-a-lifetime performance, but I'll give it to you in just one word: FIERCE! Of all the many cast recordings of Gyposy, this is the definitive recording to have! This Barnes & Noble special edition 2-CD set complete with a bonus disc with extra songs that appear on no other version of this album holds some very special surprises! There are several songs here that were cut from the original 1959 production and have never been heard since. They can now be heard here by the powerhouse voice of the great Patti LuPone! Patti LuPone won the Tony award for this performance. The show is still running on Broadway! If there's any way you can see LuPone on Broadway in Gypsy, you should do so! If you need to sell your antiques, do so! If you need to get a second mortgage on your house, do so! If you need to cash out the kid's college fund, do so! LuPone. Gypsy. Don't miss it! (And buy this CD!)

Barnes & Noble's exclusive version of the 2008 cast recording boasts Eight Bonus Tracks on a bonus CD.All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
The third Broadway revival of the 1959 musical Gypsy closed on May 30, 2004; the fourth, chronicled on this album, opened on March 27, 2008, a gap of less than four years. Ordinarily, even a perennially popular show like Gypsy ...
