Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
This story features the redheaded, wild-looking, iconoclastic Spikes family. Earl, the eldest and most repulsive as far as Kim Sanders is concerned, has a crush on Kim and will do anything to see that she makes the cheerleading squad. The only thing worse than having the Spikes as enemies is being befriended by this pack of non-conformist wild cats. The angst and mayhem of the middle school set is right on. A fun continuation of The Crazy Gang Next Door.

Gr 4-7They're back! The wild, pipe-smoking, tobacco-chewing, redheaded Spikes gang from The Crazy Gang Next Door (HarperCollins, 1992) have transferred to Bryant Junior High, where they continue to make Kim Sanders's life interesting, to say the least. Blowing up the science lab, placing a stink bomb in a locker, lacing orange juice with vodka at a student-council meeting, stealing cars, and even kidnapping are not beyond these kids. They make a strange and unwelcomed alliance with Kim to help her qualify for the cheerleading squad, their motivation stemming from Earl Spikes's desire to be king to Kim's queen at the Fall dance. Although slight and highly improbable, exaggerated, and clichd, this book will appeal to readers who enjoy stories that are humorous, fast-paced, and zany.Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME
