Overview

He was the first to popularize the concept of time travel. He disturbed—and fascinated–us with a frightening doctor’s island. He wrote of an invisible man, of men on the moon, and of a war of the worlds. He has influenced countless other writers, artists, and even scientists. H. G. Wells is one of the most acclaimed science fiction writers who ever lived, and six of his classic tales are collected in this book for readers to treasure.

H. G. Wells includes The Time Machine, The Island of Dr Moreau, The Invisble Man, The War of the Worlds, The First Men in the Moon, and The Food of the Gods. Readers new to this remarkable author will delight in these amazing stories, while fans of Wells will enjoy the insightful introduction by an expert on the author’s life and work.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
The text of this revised edition of Wells's lesser-known fiction is impressive but the artwork falls short. Most of the text is abridged or somewhat paraphrased, but the adaptations are extraordinary. The sense of each work is preserved, but each is different in its presentation. The Tempation of Herringay, a work with which many readers might not be familiar, is mostly text with surreal illustrations at the top and bottom of each page. The Star, one of Wells's more recognizable pieces, is almost entirely told through the artwork and is the most impressive of the collection. The black-and-white illustrations do not always add to the text in other works, and some seem a bit too juvenile. The artists and contributors are given short biographies at the end of the volume. Given the artwork in other graphic novels, this one does not compare well. Much of that, however, is due to the lack of color. It is doubtful that reluctant readers would pick this item over other graphic novels. It does fare very well, however, as an introduction to Wells's fiction. I need this to be clear to other buyers. This is not a Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Classic. This is part of the CC lineup and will not match the dimensions of the other books in the BN collection. It is leather and it is a classic series of HG Wells books, just not part of the BN LBC lineup. Same with the Verne novel as well. I was a bit surprised when i received mine. Other than that, it is fantastic.

This collection by H.G. Wells is a very nice book. The binding is sturdy, the paper is heavy, and the cover is quite pleasing to the eye. The stories themselves are also very good, the plots are all very well thought out. I am not a big fan of the writing style of H.G. Wells, as he tends to be dragged off onto tangents from time to time and include details that have no pertinence to the story. His writing style is clearly from the early 1900's and late 1800's, which is not a con all the time, but I found it to be one in this case. The stories were absolutely groundbreaking for their time, and have inspired many science fiction authors from C.S. Louis to H.P. Lovecraft. All in all I liked this collection, although I admit I did not read all 7 novels, I have only read 3 of them, but the style seems to be pretty consistent. If one is interested in science fiction, I would also recommend C.S. Lewis's space trilogy, and the complete collection of H.P. Lovecraft, I have provided a link to these books to the left of the page for those interested.

This is a must have for all fans of H. G. Wells, Science Fiction, and classic literature in general. I have read each of these works individually and have always wanted a nice edition that contained them all. Now it is here and at a great price too.

this book contains 7 of Wells' novels, all in a nice looking hardcover.
this is a limited special edition collection from Barnes and Noble, I highly recommend this if your wanting to read these 7 novels at a great price.

This series, the Great Illustrated Classics, is wonderful for the struggling reader. He or she still gets a taste of those wonderful stories we 'old fogies' read when we were children, but at a level he or she can enjoy. I had remedial readers eating them up...they couldn't get enough of them!
