    I Also Recommend:

    Lovecraft rules

I guess I am getting old, but the new Horror writers can't hold a candle to the old stuff. And these have introductions/critiques from old HPL himself. Genuinely scary stuff, I love it.

    I Also Recommend:

Highly recommended for any horror fiction fan

If you're a horror fan or more particularly a Lovecraft aficionado, you'll find familiar motifs threaded through these stories, themes that he amplified and recast in his own work. "Fishhead" adumbrates the fish-frog beings that inhabit the moldering seaport of Innsmouth; "The Great God Pan" hints at that mind-shattering cosmic revelation that lurks at the edges of the familiar.
The book starts with Lovecraft's seminal and so far unsurpassed literary critique of the genre: "Supernatural Horror in Literature." It sets a tone that Lovecraft pursued throughout his life - the artistic validity of the best horror fiction.
For about $8, you'll purchase a 532-page book that encompasses some of the highlights of the literature: "The Great God Pan," "The Damned Thing," "Count Magnus," and many more.
These stories are filled with subtlety and suggestiveness, but the cartoonish artwork strikes with the delicacy of a meat cleaver. It's a common downfall of the genre. The cover of this book looks like a movie poster for "Return of the Mummy."
One note: Unless you're already familiar with the works, I'd suggest reading the introductory paragraph by Lovecraft that precedes each story after you've read the piece. Spoilers abound.
One of the editors, Stephen Jones, oversees production of the annual Mammoth Book of Best New Horror, another worthwhile read.
