Near the end of the novel one of the women says it best: "You're all just cutthroats." The novel depicts war and politics in 19th century Russia, but the sentiments and motivations remain the same in 2009. Sadly, we don't learn from our mistakes. The reading is not always easy to follow, but the philosophy behind the story is worth thinking about. It is quite short, so it is a manageable Russian novel.
