Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
First, it might help to understand what haiku is. According to wikipedia, haiku, is a form of Japanese poetry, consisting of 17 Japanese on (a phonetic unit identical to the mora), in three metrical phrases of 5, 7, and 5 on respectively, and typically containing a kigo, or seasonal reference. In Japanese, haiku are traditionally printed in a single vertical line, while haiku in English usually appear in three lines, to equate to the Japanese haiku's three metrical phrases. Most writers of literary haiku in English use about ten to fourteen syllables, with no formal pattern. The focus of this book is nature related—rain, a flower, sun, a leaf, snow and the moon. The poems and art work nicely together with a red fox chasing a leaf to the poem "yoo-hoo, peekaboo! / wind plays tag with autumn leaf—/ catch me if you can!" This book is a delightfl introduction to this form of poetry for kids and parents. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

My 16 month old loves this book. The short poems are great for her attention span, and the colorful pictures are very interesting to her. My nine-year old loves it as well. It's a great purchase!
