Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Ed Goldberg
Ollie is the new White House executive chef. She and her staff are busy preparing Thanksgiving dinner for the president and first lady and gearing up for a busy holiday season during a time of much tumult at the White House. A fake bomb is found, causing a White House evacuation and a Secret Service investigation. Soon after, the White House electrician is electrocuted while restoring power to the Red Room. The First Lady is being pressured by her three partners to sell a successful, philanthropic business, Zendy, started by their fathers. Sean, the President's nephew and First Lady's business advisor regarding Zendy, is found dead, an apparent suicide. Ollie is accosted and almost abducted on her way home one evening. Everyone is under suspicion. There is a lot of action, and Ollie seems to be in the thick of it. This second Ollie Paras mystery stands on its own. Hyzy cooks up a thoroughly enjoyable, fluffy mystery, with all the right ingredients. The diverse characters are crisp, the dialogue is natural, and the descriptions bring the reader vividly into the White House during the holidays. The story takes place over one week, and the action simmers. The suspense is palpable, and the conclusion will satisfy any palate. An appendix includes appetizer recipes. The writing, although not simple, is suitable for seventh grade and older. Put this adult-marketed book on the menu for teens to savor. Reviewer: Ed Goldberg
VOYA - Liza M. David
This action-packed novel is a fun read. The setting provides an interesting background, although the story line is predictable. A bit simplified and exaggerated, the novel appeals to a broad audience by combining cooking with bombs. The theme of listening to your intuition and trusting yourself incorporates a serious message in this entertaining novel. The writing style is geared toward older teens while the uncomplicated plot line is enjoyable for everyone, especially following an election year. Reviewer: Liza M. David, Teen Reviewer

    Interesting and Tasty

Executive Chef Ollie Paras leads the reader through the halls of the White House into a world few of us will ever see. The details of the east wing and protocols that are followed are an interesting insider view of the people's house. The story line has some twists and turns, but is at the same time a comfortable read. It's the perfect book to curl up and read in front of the fireplace. While most of the characters seem realistic, I find it very hard to believe that she and her boyfriend, who also works at the White House, have successfully kept their relationship secret for over a year. Maybe in the next book they'll be found out and can be open about their relationship.

Fun characters and a good mystery

I love this series. The charaters are well written and interesting. The storyline is terrific. And not to mention some good recipes are included. I also love that these books incorporate the white house and some facts that may not be known to the average person!

Step into the behind the scenes world at the White House....at least in the kitchen!

This was a fun mystery, especially for anyone who loves light mystery with a touch of humor and the allure of the White House. I look forward to reading the third in this series.

Since I live in Washington Metro area I love reading books that take place here. I used to read Margaret Truman mysteries just because of that. But now I have found the White House Chef series by Julie Hyzy. Ollie the main character is the head chef at the White House and get herself into hot water that is not just in the kitchen. These mysteries are not about the mystery ingredient
in her pot roast, but about issues that affect the White House and the people who live there. A really great series do not miss it.

    Highly Recommended

This is a great series. Hail to the Chef is very good. I like to learn all the goings on in the White House.. We never think about the behind the scenes things that have to take place for the House to run smoothly. A Murder or two makes is the main thing, of course.

Ollie Paras, the newly appointed White House Executive Chef, is

Ollie Paras, the newly appointed White House Executive Chef, is back in the kitchen. It’s the most stressful time of year for the White House staff, preparing for Thanksgiving and the quickly approaching launch of Christmas festivities in America’s Home. When a bomb is found in the White House, they call in a Special Secret Service team to investigate, and shortly after the chief electrician is found dead, apparently electrocuted. Did their experienced electrician really make a fatal error? And will whoever planted the first bomb try again? Ollie must put her acute observational senses to work and do what she can to thwart sinister plans to take down the White House.
I loved the holiday setting of this mystery, and it had a lot going on to keep you reading. Bombs, electrocution, suspicious suicide, tangled business deals, Secret Service Agents. There was so much going on in this story, it was impossible to get bored and while you might think things could get muddled along the way, Hyzy did a great job of keeping it all straight and giving lots of little clues and twists along the way. The ending tied it up and while it may not have been tight enough for the ultra-realist readers, I think the average cozy reader will be wholly satisfied.

    The Real Mystery?
How this story juggled so many crimes and suspects while still being totally easy to follow and satisfying!
