Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Fred N. Littooy, MD (Loyola University Medical Center)
Description: This updated fourth edition of a comprehensive textbook of vascular surgery comes seven years after the third edition and doubles as an atlas for vascular procedures. High-quality illustrations, including photographs and line drawings, are an excellent complement to the text. More than 100 contributors, respected authorities in the field of vascular surgery, wrote chapters in their areas of expertise.
Purpose: The authors intended to incorporate the past knowledge of the field of vascular surgery together with present progress since the last edition. Updates and revisions are prominent in the areas of the treatment of carotid artery disease, endovascular techniques and results, noninvasive imaging, and treatment of venous disease. Because of the rapid evolution in vascular surgery, updating previous editions of even the best vascular textbooks is necessary.
Audience: The authors target the experienced general and vascular surgeon. They also target the surgical resident looking for an all-inclusive text and atlas for vascular procedures. Actually, this text has its greatest utility for the surgical resident and vascular fellow who are looking for a good vascular atlas with well-informed commentary. This book also appeals to the generalist who is looking for a user-friendly, all-inclusive reference.
Features: This handsome book has high quality paper and excellent binding. Photographs and illustrations are of excellent quality and nicely accent the accompanying text. References have been updated in this new edition and are pertinent to the new material. A section of color illustrations highlighting noninvasive imaging and endovascular techniques is a useful addition to this updated text.
Assessment: This well-illustrated new edition offers very useful information in areas that have progressed since the last edition. Other vascular textbooks are more comprehensive, but this one continues to provide a nice overall view with good illustrations as an atlas of vascular procedures. It would be particularly useful for the surgical resident or vascular fellow. The updated information justifies the new edition.
