Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
This is a far-fetched tale from the "Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo" series, about third-grader Katie Carew who possesses the power to pull switcheroos, or switch into someone or something else. As this tale begins, Katie learns that her band gets to play in a real band concert. She rushes home to tell her mom but is disappointed to learn her dad will be out of town for the concert. However, Katie's mom and Katie's friend Suzanne will be able to attend. So Suzanne takes it upon herself to get Katie a make-over with a new haircut given by Sparkle, a dazzling hairdresser at the mall. Suzanne schedules an appointment for herself, too, since she is going to be in a fashion show. When they get to the salon Katie's special switcheroo powers take over at an inopportune time. She changes into Sparkle and cuts Suzanne's hair. Unfortunately, Katie has no cutting experience and gives Suzanne's hair a chopped up look. Suzanne fumes, Katie switches back to Katie, and Sparkle is left with no idea about what happened. At the modeling show, Katie convinces Suzanne to go on stage with her bad cut and she is praised for her new asymmetrical style! Suzanne revels in the attention. In the end, Katie's dad makes it home for Katie's concert and everyone is happy. As with all the books in the series, this one will grab the attention of third through sixth grade girls looking for a fun read. The dialogue flows well, themes are typical of the age, and readers can identify with the school, mall, and friendship experience. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
