Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A duckling convinces the pooch hero to play. "The pictures are amiably animated and suitably silly, but watch those wonderful waggish words," wrote PW of the earlier Hairy Maclary books. Ages 2-5. (Apr.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Hairy Maclary has a lazy day planned, with visions of taking a snooze in the shade, but as soon as he lays back, a little duckling named Zachary Quack decides it would be better to play. The rhyming text is upbeat and would make an excellent read-aloud to a primary class. The book could also be used with older grades as an example of how to incorporate rhyme into a story. This is one in the "Gold Star First Reader" series of different adventures for Hairy Maclary. 1999, Gareth Stevens Publishing, $21.27. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Sharon Tolle

PreS-Gr 2-Hairy's back, this time leading Zachary Quack through garden and woods for a merry game of hide-and-seek, with each posture a picture of bliss. If the sight of Hairy's black fur askew as he plunges into the river does not get a chuckle, prepare at least for unabashed sighs at the end when dog and duck cuddle for a nap. Delicate lines and an amazing range of shades dress up the rhyming text, and amusing onomatopoeia captures the duck's frolic.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

My 3yr old can't get enough of this book. We both love the word-play and determination written in the story. It's a very fun read! "Pittery pattery, scittery scattery . Zip 'round the corner came Zachary Quack..." We've even recorded our voices to our nook hd, so it's even more fun for her to hear her own voice!

Be careful when picking up this book in a library. Even without a child in sight, it is impossible to read silently or even in a normal volume voice. HAIRY MACLARY AND ZACHARY QUACK bursts with contagious energy. Dodd's verse masters the use of sound repetition and onomatopoeia. Her words and rhythm enthusiastically - and quite literally - run with her characters. Start reading, and your voice will surely get carried away.. Thematically, this book as well proves strong. Although Zachary the duck is determined, Hairy Maclary does not want him for a friend. In fact Hairy prefers being by himself. Nevertheless, when Hairy discovers Zachary's loyalty and true friendship, he just might change his mind. MACLARY AND QUACK beautifully articulates the essence of friendship.
