Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The first title, published in New Zealand in 1983 and making its U.S. debut, introduces the diminutive black dog and a host of canine pals in a cumulative text. They take the town until a giant tomcat sends them all homeward. In the second book (published in 1984), the same motley crew follows the hero in hopes of taking his bone but, one by one, Hairy outmaneuvers them. Ages 2-5. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
The alliteration in this book is fabulous. Young children will want to read and re-read the words in this book. The names of the dogs are repeated in the story so that children will be able to follow along with their parent. The work is short and concise. The story line is about a small black dog and his friends who run into the local tomcat and get so scared that they run home to bed. The pictures of the dogs are so detailed one can see the personalities of the dogs on every page. This feel-good book can be used to teach kids about dealing with fear. This is also a good book to get children interested in reading and is sure to be a favorite for many years. 2000, Gareth Stevens, $21.27. Ages 2 to 5. Reviewer: Nicole Peterson

Best Book to Read with Your Kids

The book is written very cleverly. My dad read it to my siblings and I almost every night. I was so excited to receive the book and start reading it with my kids. They have caught on to the patterns and now like to "read" it to me.

Delightful book to read to childern

I love the rhymes and the illustrations. I have been reading this book for the past 5 years to grandchildren. They all fall in love with Hairy and his friends...even Scarface Claw! Please don't let this book go out of print.
Would also recommend Hairy Maclary and friends but could not find it listed.

    Childhood memories

This is a wonderful book for children who are learning to read! It has fun pictures and good rhythm to it. This was the first book I read by myself (I memorized it!). I also recommend the other Hairy Maclary books. I still have my copies from almost 20 years ago!
