Hairy Maclary felt mischievous and mad. He was not in the mood for the Kennel Club's Obedience Class

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Harry Maclary was clearly not in the mood for the Kennel Club's Obedience Class. A title in the "Gold Star First Reader" series, this is a great story for beginning readers from popular New Zealand author/illustrator, Lynley Dodd. This funny dog's tale is told in lyrical, lighthearted rhyme. The full-color illustrations overflow with fanciful renderings of every kind of canine, from dachshund to Great Dane. Kids will love the action in the text, as it keeps the story rolling along. Kids will also love the humor in Dodd's watercolors, which are painted (from a dog's eye view) in a fresh, spring-like palette. This versatile picture book is well-suited both as a read aloud for younger children and as a good start for the youngster just beginning to read. The text's simple structure and strong rhymes allow beginning readers to easily "sound out" words. Truly a fun "day at the park!" 2001, Gareth Stevens, . Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree

PreS-K--In this latest addition to the series, Hairy scampers away to avoid participating in an obedience class. He is soon followed by the other dogs in the class, as each in turn escapes. The animals are shown running, jumping, and generally having a good time until they all go "splat" in the pond. The full-color illustrations are attractive and simple enough for children to identify the various breeds. However, while the repetitive "galloping here, galloping there, rollicking, frolicking, EVERYWHERE" will please young listeners, the minimal plot offers little else. Hairy Maclary lovers will want this one; but if you don't have a current fan club for this pooch, don't start one with this title.--Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York City
