Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Though Schrader is primarily a medieval scholar, his Mencken compilation is an excellent addition to Matthew J. Bruccoli's "Pittsburgh Series in Bibliography." It provides detailed bibliographic descriptions of works by Mencken published from 1899 to 1996, except for the periodical and newspaper items enumerated in Betty Adler's H.L.M.: The Mencken Bibliography. Schrader includes reproductions of many title pages and dust jackets as well as a good title, personal name, and publisher index. While Adler's book includes many entertaining and informative annotations, Schrader's focus is on exhaustive bibliographic description. A fine purchase for research libraries with strong interest in Mencken and his era.--Peter A. Dollard, Alma Coll. Lib., Mt. Pleasant, MI

"M is for MENCKEN/A Merry Mocker, A'Nawful Knocker, A Galvanizing Shocker. But under all his jibes, and diatribes, At Morons, Babbits and Democracy, Lies the man's hatred of hypocrisy." This rhyme from Maryland Miniatures 1634-1934 by a Lover of Maryland begins this bibliography of Mencken publications, 1899-1996, with B. Adler's definitive bibliography on his magazine and newspaper articles incorporated. Sections cover: separate publications; first appearances in books and pamphlets; periodical appearances; juvenalia, jokes, ephemera, and other private printings; keepsakes, offprints, pamphlet piracies, and promotional items; ghosts and other unlocated items; and translations and Braille versions. Includes facsimile covers and excerpts, and an undated frontispiece photograph of Mencken. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
