Overview

With candor and humor, a manic-depressive Iranian-American Muslim woman chronicles her experiences with both clinical and cultural bipolarity.

Born to Persian parents at the height of the Islamic Revolution and raised amid a vibrant, loving, and gossipy Iranian diaspora in the American heartland, Melody Moezzi was bound for a bipolar life. At 18, she began battling a severe physical illness, and her community stepped up, filling her hospital rooms with roses, lilies and hyacinths.

But when she attempted suicide and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, there were no flowers. Despite several stays in psychiatric hospitals, bombarded with tranquilizers, mood-stabilizers, and anti-psychotics, she was encouraged to keep her illness a secret—by both her family and an increasingly callous and indifferent medical establishment. Refusing to be ashamed or silenced, Moezzi became an outspoken advocate, determined to fight the stigma surrounding mental illness and reclaim her life along the way.

Both an irreverent memoir and a rousing call to action, Haldol and Hyacinths is the moving story of a woman who refused to become a victim. Moezzi reports from the frontlines of an invisible world, as seen through a unique and fascinating cultural lens. A powerful, funny, and moving narrative, Haldol and Hyacinths is a tribute to the healing power of hope and humor.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
“Perhaps insanity is inescapable when you separate a soul from its vessel,” muses Iranian-American activist, author, and lawyer Moezzi (War on Error) in her strangely affecting chronicle of living with bipolar disorder. She attributes her affliction to a variety of factors—cultural vertigo, post-9/11 prejudice against Muslims, a rare pancreatic disorder, overwhelming family pressure—and over the years has attempted suicide and suffered from a full-blown manic episode, as well as psychotic breaks. To recreate the gaps in her memory during these traumatic periods, she relies on recollections of friends and family, and her husband’s detailed notes. Some readers may not embrace Moezzi’s bad-girl persona—she stages rebellions in hospital wards and offers strong opinions on a range of subjects—but her vivid descriptions of being pulled against her will in a swirl of impulsivity, hallucinations, and paranoia are riveting. She also uses offbeat humor to criticize the medical profession’s handling of the mentally ill. Her often black-and-white thinking is mercifully softened by abundant gratitude for the saintly patience of her husband, the practicality of her mother, and the wisdom of her Rumi-quoting father. A poetic portrait of life on the lines of sanity and a mind on the edge of cultures. Agent: Ayesha Pande, Ayesha Pande Literary. (Aug.)
Library Journal
A Ms. and Huffington Post blogger, NPR commentator, and blogger/columnist for Bipolar Magazine, plus author of the praised War on Error, Iranian American Muslim activist and attorney Moezzi has a built-in readership for this memoir about her battles with clinical and cultural bipolarity.
Kirkus Reviews
An Iranian-American political activist and writer's memoir of how she came to terms with her bicultural heritage and bipolar disorder. When Huffington Post and Ms. blogger Moezzi was born in the United States in 1979, her fate was sealed--at least, according to theocrats who took over the country her Iranian doctor parents left behind. "I was both Westoxified (in the Ayatollah's words) and highly inclined to lose my mind," she writes. Unlike the children of those parents who stayed in Iran, Moezzi grew up affluent and surrounded by a huge extended family of other Persian exiles. But at 18, when her "westoxified" body rebelled against her for two years, Moezzi was forced to deal with both a life-threatening case of pancreatitis and what appeared to be a case of depression. Surgery seemed to cure her of both ailments, and her life resumed its charmed course. Moezzi traveled to Montana to spend a joyful summer ("I was sure that if God lived anywhere, it had to be Montana") reconnecting with her Muslim faith, unaware that her euphoria was a manifestation of mania. She graduated from college and went to law school, where she developed an interest in the politics of Islam and also attempted suicide. Moezzi's battles with her "mutinous mind" were far from over, however. While campaigning for Barack Obama in 2008, she experienced an even more severe mental breakdown that stemmed from full-blown mania. The author's candor about her experiences in and with the medical establishment is bracing. Physical illness elicits sympathy, cards and flowers; however, she writes, "if you have mental illness, you get plastic utensils, isolation and fear." Yet Moezzi knows that she has been lucky. Life in Iran--and possibly in and out of the Iranian jails that make "American psychiatric hospitals look idyllic"--would have been far worse. A bold, courageous book by a woman who transforms mental illness into an occasion for activism.

    Reviews are for wrong books!

Why are all the reviews about cats and clans in the YA Warriors series? Is this accidental or is it designed to make mentally unstabe people feel even more cofunsed.

The actual book looks intriguing from the brief 5 page sample, but I'm going to have to check Amazon for reviewsto decide if it's worth buying.

    Heather&co

    Name;; Junebug
    Gender;; SheCat
    Age;; 23 moons
    Rank;; Medicine Cat

Appearance;; Junebug is an extremely petite young shecat. Out of her litter she was born a runt, meaning she is smaller than the average cat. But what she lacks in size, she wholely makes up for it in personality and knowledge. Junebug is a breed of cat called manx, or tail-less cat. She looks like a small bobcat, with an average chocolate pelt and dak brown speckled tabby markings. She has tall eartips that are a brilliant snowy white, along with a patch on her chest the same color. She a long fur that grows to half way down her short legs. Her eyes are gems, a sparkling pale green that gleam like moons in the dark. These eyes are accented with midnight fur that outlines them, the same streak of dark fur runs a line down her cheeks. Also raising upwards in regular tabby markings for the face. Her cheeks, and muzzle are also splotched with the same white colors that are found on her tall eartips and chest. Her belly fur is a light tan color, and sinks into a white on the inside of her legs. Her paws are the same tan found on her belly.

Personality;; Junebug is in general a happy, and cheerful cat. Having little to no bad past, she never has a reason to the bad in cats. Though this does have its downsides, meaning she trusts almost every cat she encounters with the mindset that they would never hurt her because she has never hurt them. She loves to joke around, and smile and can come off as never serious. But she can be extremely calm when needed, usually when she is working with severe cases. During these times she can become a bit commanding but only because she thinks the situation calls for it. Junebug is also a very determined, and fair shecat with a love for competition. All in all, she can be described as loyal, dedicated, and happy with just a general love for others.

Likes;; She loves run, though she isn't that fat with her short legs. She also loves the calming effect of sorting herbs, and comforting cats. Junebug loves to make new friends, and you better watch your ears because she can talk them right off of you.

Dislikes;; You will never, ever see Junebug eating fish. She absolutely hates the smell, taste, and even look of those slimy disgusting creatures. Junebug also hates attitudes, though she deals with them well, she just can't understand why they are willing to demean others when they haven't wronged them.

Mate;; she is a medicine cat
Kits;; this is against the warrior code
    Crush;; nope c:

History;; She was originally the medicine cat for Inkclan, but as time moved on and after many camp relocations the clan eventually died out. Leaving Junebug with no clan, and also no cats to care for. Along the way from her journey to discover another home, she treated random loners, and rogues. When she found Thunderclan, she knew she was going to stay her for a long while.

    Ripple's Bio!

    Name- Ripple... <p>

Age- He is about fifteen moons. <p>

    Gender- Tom. <p>

Rank- Loner, he hangs around camp, though. Talk to him. Convince the tom to join officially. He has more than enough experience to become a warrior. <p>

Description- He is a pure black cat with deep, piercing blue eyes. Simple. <p>

Personality- At first, he seems shy and quiet. Talk to him, he opens up and is actually quite bubbly. There is also a fairly wise (for a young cat) side of him to go along with the caring. Never would he usually turn away a cat who needs help or comfort. <p>

Crush- Err, no. He has been a loner his whole life and JUST found out about this Clan. <p>

    Mate- ... <p>

    Kits- o-e <p>

History- Never to be revealed. <p>

Theme Song- "Keep Your Head Up" by Andy Grammer and "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons. <p>

Other- Ask! He'd be happy to answer. As long as it is appropriate, though.
