Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This short but informative chapter book continues the series titled, "True Books," about our national parks. It is a perfect introduction for beginning researchers in the primary and intermediate grades and also a useful resource for the home. Some of the chapters include, "The Legend of Haleakala" and "How the Islands Began," which includes information about volcanoes and tectonic plates. Dramatic photographs display an eruption and a lava flow. The book includes a glossary, index, map and resources where readers can find further information about the topic, including on-line resources. Beautiful color photographs grace almost every page and vividly reveal the truly remarkable beauty in this national park. The chapter about First People includes information about the first islanders, called Polynesians, the first European explorer, James Cook and the plants and animals he brought with him on his explorations, including the mongoose. A fascinating look at our fiftieth state. 2001, Children's Press, $22.00. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Sue Reichard
