Overview

Allan Ahlberg cuts to the chase in this madcap tale illustrated by his daughter, Jessica Ahlberg, in her picture-book debut.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Jessica Ahlberg makes a high-spirited debut in this higgledy-piggledy book written by her father, who collaborated with his late wife on The Jolly Postman and many other titles. Rendered in watercolor, colored pencil and ink, her pictures call to mind the simple line and soft pastel shadings of her mother's artwork. The pictures easily match the frivolity of Allan Ahlberg's (The Little Cat Baby, reviewed above) plot as it chronicles the dark developments that befall Esmeralda the pig and her divorced owners, kind Mrs Harbottle and her nasty ex-husband. Mr Harbottle ("a horrid man with uncombed hair and dirty fingernails" who had consumed so many sausages "that really he looked like a sausage") hires some hoodlums to kidnap the pig (and readers have no doubt as to the pig's intended fate). The artist shows her kidnappers mapping out scenarios for the best way to separate the pig into equal halves (one drawing shows a butcher's map of pork cuts; another depicts the pig literally separated in two). But the pig escapes, precipitating a zany chase scenario involving the two men and two children who live next door to Mrs Harbottle. The author uncharacteristically prefaces his tale with a chatty introduction spotlighting all the "good words" that readers will encounter in the ensuing pages, and somewhat intrusively interjects them into his narrative, with asides and footnotes. Still this farcical, curlicue tale is bound to elicit some squeals of glee from youngsters. Ages 5-8. (May) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Poor Mrs. Harbottle. She dearly loves her very contented pig Esmeralda, but alas, she owns only half of the pig. Her ex-husband owns the other half and he is a terrible man with questionable hygiene. Mr. Harbottle wants his half of Esmeralda to make his beloved sausages: "He had eaten so many that really he looked like a sausage, a sausage with a hat on." Mr. Harbottle sends the evil Swiggins Brothers to kidnap Esmeralda in the middle of the night. The pig is saved after much adventure by Rose and Billy, neighborhood children who swing into action (still in their pajamas) to rescue Esmeralda. Half of this book's entertainment comes from the author's asides to the reader. It begins on the flyleaf, where the reader is assured "You'll like this book." The author addresses the reader directly for the first few pages, promising the reader that entertainment will follow and then spends two pages to list the vocabulary used in the story. Younger children may not get all the author's jokes, but the story itself has plenty to keep them amused. Jessica Ahlberg's artwork—done with soft colored pencil, watercolor and ink—are the perfect accompaniment to her father's story. This will be a popular read-aloud and a popular choice for independent readers. 2004, Candlewick Press, Ages 5 to 10.

School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-A humorous, action-filled tale about a pig divided. Kind Mrs. Harbottle loves Esmeralda but she only owns half of the porker. Her evil husband would like to turn his half into sausages. Now that they are divorced, he sends some thugs to claim the pig. Luckily, the children who live next door give chase and successfully engineer the animal's return. The tale begins with an invitation from the author to read the story ("It is an excellent one in my opinion, but then I would say that, wouldn't I"). Funny footnotes appear throughout. Done in watercolor, colored pencil, and ink, the cartoon illustrations are bright and appealing. The words and pictures are playfully intertwined and mutually supportive. Although the narrative is a bit wordy, the artwork will assist independent readers' understanding of the text.-Phyllis M. Simon, Bay Shore School District, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A wild custody battle over a pig becomes the raison d'etre for Ahlberg pere's latest deconstruction of the picture book. From an opening that directly addresses the reader (or listener) and lays out the various verbal ingredients for the story to come, to a conclusion that somewhat ruefully considers the ingredients that were left by the wayside, this story constantly draws attention to its artifice. Ahlberg fille's cartoony illustrations romp across the page in a raucously choreographed dance with the text, employing arrows and diagrams that helpfully guide the reader (or listener) through the story. The actual story gleefully participates in almost every available cliche: Mr. Harbottle, Solomonically determined to have his half of the pig Esmeralda for sausages, hires the very dim Swiggins Brothers to do the deed. While Mrs. Harbottle frets, plucky neighbors Rose and Billy "(still in their pyjamas)" thwart the plan. The fun does not obscure the senior Ahlberg's very serious commitment to words, and one can only hope that readers (and listeners) will take him up on his exhortation to use some good ones in stories of their own.
