Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
Treasure Bay advertises their Half and Half Books, which combine fiction and nonfiction in a single book, provide a Great Story and Cool Facts. Swimming with Dolphins does not disappoint in that regard since it is like two books in one. First there is a story titled "S.O.S. Dolphin" about Pablo and his dad encountering a dolphin while they are swimming in the ocean. They are alarmed initially when the dolphin approaches them, but then realize the ocean mammal is asking for their help and an ocean adventure begins. An illustrated interactive activity questions the reader about the order of events in the story. The second part of the book titled "Facts: About Dolphins" explains how dolphins communicate, the dangers they face, and describes their social behavior. Photographs supplement the text for the nonfiction section. An additional activity which demonstrates how sound waves bounce off objects is also provided for this section. A page titled "Dolphin Tales" relates stories about dolphins rescuing humans at sea. These books are a unique concept that would readily engage even the reluctant reader since Half and Half books provide a perfect bridge for readers to cross from story to facts. Parental involvement in the more difficult nonfiction section is encouraged. A table of contents provides easy navigation through the book. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
