Children's Literature - Margaret Orto
Both fiction and nonfiction are included in this level 2 (intermediate reading) book in the "Half and Half" series. First, readers can enjoy a simple story about an Egyptian girl who longs to see the pyramids under construction. Then, they can learn from a section of more challenging factual material about life during the time of the Pharaohs. For this more difficult "real facts" section, the publisher suggests that children read along with adults. In the story, a young Egyptian girl named Meri boldly follows her father to the forbidden work site of the pyramids where he is employed. Plenty of adventure ensues, including an encounter with some hippopotamuses, a face-off with a crocodile and a run-in with the Pharaoh himself. The story engages while revealing many facts about life in this ancient civilization. The factual section augments readers' understanding of everyday life along the Nile, the gods of ancient Egypt and hieroglyphics. The illustrator of Meri's story uses a golden palette that meshes well with the earth-toned drawings and photographs found in the factual section. Informative and fun backmatter includes a "Did you Know?" page, a pattern for making a Pharaoh's headdress and a glossary. Here, the "two books in one" concept works well. Reviewer: Margaret Orto
