This ten-song budget-priced compilation has been kicking around Cher's discography for years, confusing lots of younger fans who mistake it for the similarly titled Half-Breed album, from 1974. As it happens, there are a couple of songs (including the title track) from the latter album here, along with material off of Dark Lady, Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves, and other MCA albums of the same period, among them several major hits -- and they're all excellent, capturing the singer as she was emerging as a major star in her own right. Anyone discovering the music represented here for the first time will recognize instantly the virtues that Cher brought to her music -- a relatively narrow singing range coupled with tremendous intensity and passion, and an ability to meld that projection with her acting skills (which wouldn't emerge in an obvious way for a few more years) into an incredibly powerful experience for the listener. The material ranges from topical ("Half-Breed") to pure pop ("Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves," "The Way of Love"), almost outside the definition of "rock" as anyone under 30 defined it back then. And it may also all seem a bit over the top by any objective standard, but so was Cher as a personality during this period in her life and career. And despite the short running time, this CD is a fine little introduction to the second phase of her music career, for those who need it.

CHER: 51 Billboard Hot 100 Appearances, 32 reached The Top 40, 17 reached The Top 10 and 5 went to #1. Cher had 33 solo appearances which began on July 3 1965 with "All I Really Want To Do" which peaked at #15. Four of these 33 songs went to #1, 12 reached The Top Ten and 22 reached The Top 40.*** Sonny and Cher had 18 appearances which began on July 10 1965 with "I Got You Babe" which peaked at #1. One of these 18 songs went to #1, 5 reached The Top 10 and 10 reached The Top 40.*** As a Solo artist Cher, 63, has had at least one Billboard Hot 100 hit while in her Teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s and in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. During the 2000s many artists have used The Cher Effect from 1998s "Believe" which peacked at #1. Sonny and Cher first appeared on Bubbling Under The Hot 100 chart on December 26 1964 with "Baby Don't Go" which peacked at #8 on the Billboaed Hot 100 during 1965.
