Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
After nearly 20 years of marriage, the Pohlmans, in the final stages of divorce, decide to spend a year in Italy, a decision their "marital therapist called… an elaborate scheme of avoidance at best." The resulting story is full of charm, Kodak moments, and tumult typical of Americans abroad. In Italy, the family faces daily challenges, like unraveling the mysterious bus system ("...something left over from the days of Mussolini?") and dealing with the government. Even the simple act of purchasing groceries is an exercise in frustration. But eventually, Susan and Tim adapt, learning how to be spouses again, and even friends. The family perseveres, pulls together, sheds some of their American patina, and learns a new way of life in a country known for a commitment to family. Not many mothers can boast a midnight swim with a 14-year-old daughter or dropping plans to ice skate with their children simply because they wanted to. The Pohlmans' adventure is the stuff that dreams are made of. (Sept.)

    I LOVED this book!

Halfway to Each Other is one of the best books I have read in a long time. And I am a memoir junkie.

Susan Pohlman and her husband are on the verge of divorce while wrapping up a business trip in Italy. But on their last day, they decide to give the marriage one more shot by doing something a little crazy: taking out a one-year lease on an apartment on the Italian Riviera. Within weeks, Susan and her husband sell their home and car in LA, move their entire family out to Italy (two kids included!) and see what life has in store for them across the pond.

I don't want to give anything away, but all I have to say is my friends are BEGGING me to pass this book onto them! If you Google "Halfway to Each Other," all these blogs are raving about it - and it's easy to see why. Pohlman is a gifted writer with a compelling story, and this read is sure to uplift anyone who comes across it. Especially anyone who harbors questions about their own marriage - who doesn't? - or readers in need of a little soul-searching. You will NOT regret purchasing this book.

    Pohlman Brings It Home

This is the best book I have read in a long time. My marriage is in the greatest place it's ever been and still after reading this beautiful story, I'm inspired to work hard to make it even better.
Susan's incredible descriptions of the Italian countryside truly left me feeling like I've been there. What is most appealing however, is that anyone who is married has definitely "been there". We all come upon hard times, difficult choices and question the deepest parts of who we are. I love how Susan came full circle, from blaming her husband for the things that were wrong in her life, to taking an honest look at the person she wants to be.
I hope this book is optioned for a film. Many people will be helped and changed by Susan Pohlman's book.
I cannot wait for her next book, bravo Susan.

    I Also Recommend:

Every Married Woman Should Read This Book!

We've all been there. "The Crossroads," they call it. That moment in your long marriage when you need to decide if you want to stick it out or run. I used to think those were the only two choices, but in "Halfway to Each Other," the Pohlmans dare to stick it out AND run--to Italy that is. This bold decision didn't come easily, and it took them on the adventure of a lifetime, finally bringing them back to the US as a couple committed to staying together forever. I was hooked from page one and couldn't put this book down! Susan tells her story with naked honesty and humor. Every married woman should read this book.

Risk and reward make this book an inspiration to all!

I loved this book for the fact that Susan Pohlman had the guts to drop everything and escape to Italy for the purpose of saving her marriage. Many people have these types of fantasies but rarely act upon them. I was inspired by the fact that they were able to reconnect and build a stronger relationship. I also enjoyed the family adventures and the images of the countryside that she wrote about. I am definitely putting Italy on my list of places to visit.
Susan Pohlman shows us how to "think outside of the box." I would recommend this book for all readers but especially for women that need a fresh perspective on relationships.
