Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Halle Berry, an Academy Award-Wining Actress, is the topic of this biography in a series called "Biracial Achievers." Author Sapert has written a sixty-four page biography of Berry's rise to fame as a biracial woman. In her Academy Award acceptance speech as best actress in the film Monster's Ball, Berry said, "This moment is so much bigger than me...and it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened." Berry was born in 1966 to a white woman and black man. When she was four-years-old, her father moved out and Berry's mother raised her and an older sister alone. Berry was a beautiful young woman. She entered beauty pageants and became Miss Teen Ohio and Miss Teen America. She also finished second at the Miss USA pageant. After working as a model, Berry took acting classes. She began to audition for TV parts and landed a role on a show called Living Dolls. Soon Berry was noticed by Spike Lee, a director, who cast her in Jungle Fever. At times, Berry's beauty kept her from winning tough parts, but she proved she was more than just a pretty face. Berry went on to play a rehabilitated drug addict as Dorothy Dandrige, a black actress trying to get recognition in Hollywood. Berry married twice and divorced both times. She met Gabriel Aubry, a model, and they have a daughter named Nala. Berry is quoted in the book saying, "I want my kids to realize it's only through hard work that any success or real joy comes." Berry's life has had its ups and downs, but she has found success in acting and in her personal life. Color photographs are included as well as a chronology, list of awards, a glossary, further reading options, and websites. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi

Gr 6–9—Bolden uses the myriad programs of the New Deal, collectively called "alphabet soup" because they were known by their initials or acronyms, as a metaphor to describe how Roosevelt's policies and legislation gave vital nourishment to the American people and created permanent changes in the government and economy. She opens with a discussion of the unprecedented crisis of the Great Depression and Roosevelt's subsequent election, but devotes most of the book to the creation and implementation of New Deal agencies and programs, and includes quotes and primary-source excerpts to show how different segments of the population, such as workers and investors, viewed Roosevelt and his policies. The author views the New Deal positively, but does discuss how it polarized the American people and drew opposition from both the left and the right. The narrative is supplemented by numerous sidebars and facing-page inserts that provide additional information and well-captioned, high-quality reproductions of period photos and artifacts. Bolden's writing style is contemporary, with brief sentences, short paragraphs, and vocabulary that uses slang and abbreviations that may not win adult approval but will appeal to teens. The book is more focused on the New Deal than Edmund Lindop and Margaret J. Goldstein's America in the 1930s (21st Century Bks., 2009), which offers a more comprehensive overview of American life during the decade.—Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
