Welcome to the second edition of a unique guide for movie lovers, one that explores the highways and byways of cinema. This is the latest revision of the venerable Halliwell's Filmgoer's Companion, updated and rearranged to make its contents easily accessible, and with more than 1,000 new entries to extend its coverage.
Here you will find information on not only the stars, but also the character actors, the directors and producers, writers, cinematographers, composers, editors, production and costume designers, who combine to film an art and an entertainment with a mass appeal.
Although the bulk of the book is concerned with concise biographies and filmographies, you will also find information on studios and production companies, on movie series, remakes, themes and genres, which also includes entries on many fictional and cartoon characters. There is a glossary of film terms, a brief history of the medium and a listing of some of the best movie books and periodicals. All cinematic life is here, apart from reviews of the films themselves. That information can be found in the annually updated Halliwell's Film & Video Guide.
It is now 36 years since Alfred Hitchcock welcomed the first edition of the Filmgoer's Companion as: 'obviously a good thing to have on a handy shelf'. I trust it remains so, even though now the internet offers much information on films and filming. Indeed, by the time you read this, Halliwell's itself should be available on the World Wide Web, as part of Coppernob's film coverage. But a book such as this continues to provide a quick and easy means of reference, and long may it complement newer ways of gaining information.
I am grateful for the helpful advice and comments of many readers and researchers, notably: William C. Clogston, Dr Robert Dassanowsky, Bill Edwards, Allan Fish, John Glynn, Alan Goble, David Hattenstone, Bob Mastrangelo, Don Minifie, Andrew Ross and John Thaxter. They have helped make my task easier and more enjoyable. I owe thanks, too, to the editorial skills of Val Hudson and Monica Chakraverty and the technical expertise of Graham Bell and Alan Trewartha at HarperCollins, and to my agents Gloria Ferris and Rivers Scott for their encouragement. My love goes to my wife Barbara, who makes the hard work worthwhile.
