Overview

For months Clara Gardner trained to face the fire from her visions, but she wasn't prepared for the choice she had to make that day. And in the aftermath, she discovered that nothing about being part angel is as straightforward as she thought.

Now, torn between her love for Tucker and her complicated feelings about the roles she and Christian seem destined to play in a world that is both dangerous and beautiful, Clara struggles with a shocking revelation: Someone she loves will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

In this compelling sequel to Unearthly, Cynthia Hand captures the joy of first love, the anguish of loss, and the confusion of becoming who you are.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Clara loves Tucker, she really does. So why is she having these feelings for Christian? Angel-blood Clara is conflicted about her feelings for both boys and about her purpose. When the fire of her visions came, she made a choice that went against her purpose and now she does not know what she can do to make it right. To make it worse, her mother refuses to explain things to her. Through contact with other angels at the Congregation, Clara learns more about angels and her own special abilities. Then, Clara has another vision—someone she loves will die within a few months. How can she prevent the death when she does not know who is going to die or how? Clara tries to have a normal teenager's life while grappling with feelings and situations beyond her control. An evil angel, known as a Black Wing, is after her, and she fears for her life and the lives of those she loves. The characters in this first-person narrative are strong, with powerful emotions that are adeptly portrayed. Clara, Tucker, and Christian are realistic teens who grow in strength and maturity as they struggle with incredibly difficult situations. The depth of even minor characters enhances the story. Themes of destiny and free will are explored, giving the reader much to think about. Hand has crafted a captivating paranormal romance that will have readers eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Reviewer: Deborah L. Dubois
Kirkus Reviews
Readers who enjoyed the steadfast characters, plotting and romance of Unearthly (2010) can expect more of the same in this equally satisfying sequel. Picking up after the fire in which she rescued rodeo star Tucker, discovered that Christian (the boy from her dreams) is an angel like her and failed to fully realize her "purpose" as an angel, Clara Gardner faces her senior year with a new set of problems. She's started having a different set of dreams, which reveal that someone close to her is about to die. As she tries to piece together clues and a new purpose from the dreams, she must also be on constant watch for the evil fallen angel (known as a Black Wing) Samjeeza. Although it's clear which direction Clara's increasingly petulant younger brother, Jeffrey, is heading, occasional literary and pop references ("First rule of Angel Club, you do not talk about Angel Club") keep the first-person narration snappy. As in the first novel, unexpected twists lead to surprising revelations (this time helping Clara learn more about the lives of angels and her own special angel qualities), and the incessant conflict between destiny and free will drives Clara's actions—and heart. While it's readers' fate to wait for a third book in the series, they'll do so willingly to discover the answers to lingering secrets. (Paranormal romance. 13-17)

BookWhisperer Reviews Hallowed by Cynthia Hand

Hallowed is a splendid continuation of the Unearthly series. Clara and her family continue on this magical and powerful journey that still leaves the future unclear. Overall Hallowed is an emotionally charged book that will wrap up loose end from Clara's failed purpose, and open the door to what the future holds for this young girl. Tucker and Christian will continue to be a huge obstacle in this second book. As the relationship between Clara and Tucker grows; Clara finds herself facing the most difficult decision yet. Meanawhile, Christian has been a distraction in the background, but this book steps up his character. Christian is faced with the decision to allow life to pass him by, or reach out and hang on to what fate destined as his. The emotional rollercoaster that entails is eventful and intense to say the least. Although, with a divided fan base of Team Christian's or Team Tucker's mixed emotions will result from this drastic conclusion. This series is rated 8-10 grade, and I concur that this is would be a wonderful read for the younger paranormal lovers; it is clean, innocent, and addictive. With that said I must also point out that I am not of the younger generations, and this is one of my favorite series, so it is one that all ages can love. This is a BookWhisperer Recommendation!!!!!

    OMG!!!!!

This book was like freakin amazing! At first I thought it was going to be one of those books who practically have the same plot, but this one was totally different. I felt like I was actually in the book feeling exactly what the chatacters felt. I couldn't put the book down. Cynthia Hand is an author who twisted the whole plot in a way I never imagined, I was speechless! If you really love books I strongly recommend you pick this one, trust me it turns non readers into readers

a wonderful character driven paranormal romance

Hallowed book two in the Unearthly trilogy, took me on an emotional ride and left me wanting more. This novel picks up a few months after Unearthly ends. Hand’s writing style is unique and her character driven series is well on its way to becoming one of my favorites. As the middle novel we do not see a lot of movement but we learn more about angels, black wings and Clara’s lineage. Clara struggles with a new vision and what it might mean. She realizes that someone close to her is going to die and with Christian's help she slowly puts the pieces together. The answer devastates her and she looks for a way to change the outcome. Her raw emotions had me reaching for the tissues. She is still concerned about her purpose and confused by her feelings for Tucker and Christian. The love triangle continues, but Hand has managed to make it difficult to really hate either guy. In this novel, Clara gets to know Christian more and we see her try to come to terms with her feelings for him. He is significant and she feels a strong bond and perhaps she even loves him. She is so in love with Tucker and doesn't want to give him up. Yet at the same time she begins to worry about their differences and the danger she puts him in. Can’t the three of them live happily ever after? Maybe Christian could patiently wait till Tucker’s life ends? (Tucker’s human after all.) We do see character growth in Clara as she deals with loss, and a realization that sometimes; loving someone isn't enough. Jeffrey struggles with issues and is much darker in this novel. He distances himself from Clara and her Mom. It isn't until the end, that we begin to understand his struggle. We meet other half-bloods and new characters that I found delightful. Angela forms an Angel club and the four of them share information. While we get to know Angela a little better, I still have many questions. I also want to know more about her mystery man. I am also very curious about the black wing. Hand shares some of his back story and I am so intrigued. I am anxious to see how his role develops in the plot. Hand’s wonderful prose and her first person narrative sent me on an emotional roller coaster and I frequently had to pause and savor her words. She allows things to unfold realistically and for me; it made it all the more poignant. While I have never been a fan of love triangles, I think Hand may have just written the most beautiful one. The Unearthly trilogy is very character driven, and to me they are absolutely beautiful. I applaud Hand and her ability to capture my emotions and hold them hostage. I became Clara in Hallowed; I felt her emotions, her fear, her love and her heartache. I highly recommend this novel to fans of paranormal romances.

A real and honest look into the emotions of Claire the teenage angle-blood. This book made me cry. I really wanted to root for team Tucker, but found myself wrapped up in the possibility of Christain! I hope there's a book three I'm dying to know what happens in college. Go team Christain !

Angel roller coaster ride, with some to-die-for romance and steamy developmnts

So, this book is seriously the great. In the beginning, I was a little bit worried that it would not live up to its original novel. The first quarter was a teensy bit...I hate to say it...cheesy; jut rather cliched and unoriginal. I was consterned particularly because of the absense of Tucker.
Then it got good. The romance between Tuck and Clara was indubitable and extremely... hot, for lack of a better word. The emerging romance between Christian and Clara left me thinking.
The ending tore my heart out. When she cried out to Billy in desperation after It occurred ( trying not to divulge plot here, people), I pictured myself doing it. The way it ended with C and Tuck reminded me why I fell in love with Tucks character originally. But then, in my heart of hearts, i knew she and Christian belonged together.
P.S. you're in for an angel roller coaster ride. Don't know about you fellow fans of Unearthly; but i'm switching my loyalties from Tuck to Christian!

    Wonderful!!

I loved this book. To me it was better than book one. This book was much more heartbreaking and serious. You may even switch teams if you had picked one of the guys from Unearthly. It will be a long wait for book 3! Recommend these to everyone!

    Mesmerizing!

Mesmerizing right down to the very last page, HALLOWED will leave you begging for more. UNEARTHLY was one of my favorite reads in 2011 and I was eagerly awaiting the next installment to uncover all the mysteries surrounding Clara and her purpose. This book did not disappoint!

In this installment we get bits and pieces of the significance of Clara's purpose while also discovering more about her kind. This book just so happened to be a tear jerker for me which was so unexpected. I had no idea how wrapped up I was with these characters and their lives. Cynthia Hand out did herself in this installment. I can't get enough of these characters!

Some things unfolded as I expected and some not so much. Let's just say I was particularly surprised with some of the revealed secrets throughout this book. The ending of this book wrapped things up nicely but leaves readers excited about what's to come in the next chapter in this series. I can't wait to delve back into their world!

    Lovely Follow Up Story

This follow up to Unearthly was just as lovely as the first. As much of this book has to do with Clara being torn in both directions of the love triangle, it can seem like it would be any other YA novel out there. The difference here, both of the guys involved are really, really great in so many ways that it becomes heart wrenching. It’s easy to see why Clara is having trouble deciding what to do and who to open herself up to. Adding in the fact that she knows that someone she loves is going to die soon and it complicates her world even more.

Revelations are made that change everything and the future Clara is working towards. While there are many things that seem to be destined, there are other things that just throw a wrench in her world. The story is intriguing and often touching, it is certainly one of the best angel centered YA stories I’ve read.

A Must Read for Lovers of all That is Angelic

Until last week, I had not read Unearthly and I have to say I am saddened that I waited so long. I only read it so I wouldn't feel completely lost reading Hallowed but ended up falling for this series in a way I never imagined. When you hop around the blogosphere as much as I do, you find that certain books get more attention than others and that is a sad fact. Unearthly and Hallowed are two of the books I don't see tons of reviews for and it's a shame. I loved both these books but this review is for the second book in the Unearthly Series.

Hallowed begins shortly after we left Clara in Unearthly. Clara begins to have "dreams" involving deep sorrow and a cemetery. With the introduction to Black Wings she associates her visions to them but when she begins to note the things around her...she notices certain important people are missing from the gathering. Imagining the worst, Clara has to make a decision whether to tell these people they may possibly be dying or leave fate to take care of it. Knowing she isn't good at keeping secrets, she struggles more than some people would. And who knows...maybe there is a reason she can't keep secrets, some ingrained sense...or maybe not.

We learn more about the lore between the white wings and the dark wings in this installment. I loved knowing what made each "race" different. Seeing Clara's ability to deal with the Black Wing, Samjeeza, made me proud. Clara is a strong protagonist who shows her weaknesses from time to time. She has strong views on the way things should be, rebels against them, and then sometimes wishes she could redo things. Does anything say young adult better than the previous sentence? I didn't think so.

This time around...Clara faces an enormous loss. She will have to learn who they can trust and attempt to work things out with Jeremy, her brother. If there is anything worse than a teenage girl...it is only a stubborn teenage boy with a God-complex.

We get to see much more of Christian in action in Hallowed. He tries to be what Clara wants him to be with a great deal of difficulty. I enjoyed his role and his passion. I still love Tucker and I think he makes Clara happy in a teenage love sort of way. Christian is more like the rock she will always have to lean on...for now.

Ms. Hand throws a couple of zingers on the table this time around. I was shocked, saddened, and delightfully pleased. If you haven't added this to your TBR list...do so now.

    Love it!

Aaahhh! I hate myself because I competely devoured this book in one day and now there's nothing left for me to read. Its like when you finish a chocolate bar and then you realize, to your dismay, that it's all gone.

Anyways, I absolutely loved the book. It was really easy for me to connect with the main character, Clara. There were parts where I wanted to cry and parts that I couldnt stop myself from laughing out loud. This series is fantastic and I would be competely mortified if it was a short series of lets say, a trilogy. I'd be so much more satisfied as a reader if it had at least six books to the series. I know it has to end some time, so six doesn't seem like too much to ask for.

As for the book, well I don't want to spoil the story for you but briefly speaking Clara continues to recieve the same dream until she later discovers that it takes place in a cementary. Her immediate thought on who the unlucky person is that is going to die is Tucker. Well, your probably asking, IS it Tucker??? Read the book and you'll find out.
