There are four delightful short stories "King of the Cats, A Ghost Story," "The Hairy Toe," "The Jigsaw Puzzle," and "The Bed Just So" and lots of poems to help kids celebrate this favorite holiday. It is also a useful collection for teachers and librarians who may be searching for that special something for Halloween.

Poems are the major emphasis here--28 in all, from the humorous (``I'm Skeleton'' by Lilian Moore) to the scary (``The Visitor'' by Ian Serraillier). Stories range from the familiar King of the Cats and The Hairy Toe to the chilling but less well known The Jigsaw Puzzle, guaranteed to be an often-requested Halloween read-aloud. Many of Bauer's selections are available elsewhere, but not in such an appealing format--ideal for parents or teachers who don't have the time for gathering good Halloween material. Sis' pen-and-ink illustrations are wonderful--appropriately eerie or humorous, depending on the selection. The clever drawings do more than support the text; they enhance it with creative touches in nearly every drawing.
