Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3--Jonathan is excited about going to Leo's Halloween party but unhappy about wearing last year's pirate costume. At the party, however, only bossy Ashley makes fun of the recycled outfit. Jonathan feels more at ease as the games begin. When the children play Halloween Hide-and-Seek, Jonathan hides in the dark basement where he sees a white shape floating in the shadows. He is quick to appreciate the sword that comes with his old costume and wins the prize for hiding in the scariest place--a badge for bravery along with candy to share with his friends. Beginning readers will appreciate the short simple sentences, the repetition of vocabulary, and the heavy use of dialogue. The straightforward story is enhanced by Durrell's colorful, detailed illustrations that add humor throughout. Spiders, bats, cobwebs, candy corn, shaped balloons, and other decorations add sparkle to each page, and the cover illustration will grab readers.--Mary Ann Bursk, Bucks County Free Library, Levittown, PA

Then they played Guess What?

Leo turned out the lights and passed around something in the dark. It felt cold and slimy.

"Guess what it is," said Leo.

"Guts!" said Jonathan.

Ashley screamed, but she pretended it was a cough.

"I fooled you! I fooled you!" he yelled, racing around.

The guts turned out to be cold spaghetti left over from Leo's dinner.
