From the Publisher

"Simple sentences and lots of onomatopoeia make the text as appealing as the energetic watercolors-and-pen artwork. A fun read for Halloween story hours." Booklist, ALA
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
This book will be a good choice to read aloud. Mice in their Halloween costumes are out to celebrate the big night. When a cat threatens to spoil their fun, they come up with a clever scheme to scare the cat away. The simple text is delightful and the watercolor illustrations perfectly capture the expressions on the faces of the mice and the cat.

PreS-K-Costumed mice frisk, whisk, whirl, and twirl through the moonlight to party in the pumpkin patch. Rustle, rustle, swish, swish, the Halloween cat prepares to pounce. After a quick huddle, the clever rodents use their flashlight to create a monstrous shadow to frighten the cat away. Home again, the tired little creatures tumble into bed, except for the littlest, who creates his own monster. Full-page watercolors are appropriate for the holiday while not too scary for the intended audience. The simple text is packed with words to delight the ear. A worthwhile addition for a holiday that never has enough picture books.-Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE

K-Gr 2-This is a simple, lighthearted tale of partying mice on Halloween who outwit a prowling cat with a trick of their own. After the party, when the mice are falling asleep, a small mouse pulls a prank of his own. Jane Staab's reading captures the tone of mischief, suspense, and fun of Bethany Roberts' original book (Clarion, 1995). With Doug Cushman's smoky watercolors and adorable mice, the effect is perfect. One side of the tape has page-turn signals and the other side is told uninterrupted. Unfortunately, the monotonous and synthetic background music detracts from the appeal of this audio version. Nonetheless, with the demand for Halloween materials, this set will not stay on the shelves long.-Cynthia Grabke, Thayer Public Library, Braintree, MA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

A group of costumed mice are frolicking in the pumpkin patch when they hear the swish, swish of a creeping cat. Off they run, but they don't just turn tail. Using a light and a mask, they throw a shadow that frightens away the cat for good. Simple sentences and lots of onomatopoeia make the text as appealing as the energetic watercolor-and-pen artwork. A fun read for Halloween story hours.
