Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Hatch's debut, modeled on "The House That Jack Built," introduces "the owl/ who hoots at the bat/ who dips and dives up in the sky/ above the mouse/ hiding inside the jack-o'-lantern." Spilled snacks trigger a domino effect and the lucky mouse, "merry and safe," ends up munching candy corn. Pickering's (Somethin' Pumpkin) cockeyed characters and sinuous shapes, decorated with coal-black filigree vines and spirals, have a Nightmare Before Christmas flavor but, unfortunately, little depth. The lolloping, uneven rhythm and slick illustrations don't accumulate much electricity. Ages 3-6. (Aug.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Another Halloween book is always welcome especially a clever one by a first-time author. On Halloween night a timid mouse hides inside a jack-o-lantern while overhead a bat "dips and dives" and an owl hoots. On the ground a black cat slinks along. It takes a hungry dog and ghostly child trick-or treater to upset the balance of things and spill the treats that send the bat, owl, and cat scurrying. At last it is safe for little mouse to emerge and nibble his Halloween treats. This cumulative tale in the House that Jack Built style bounces along at a brisk pace and young readers will delight in the turn of events in little mouse's favor. The illustrations with their singular whimsy greatly enhance the story. The package is complete down to the typeset that is aptly named Tremble. For one-on-one or group sharing this will elicit squeals of delight. 2005, Random House, and Ages 5 to 6.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Using the framework and rhythms of "This Is the House That Jack Built," Hatch constructs a cumulative chain of events that begins with a mouse hiding inside a jack-o'-lantern. Each successive character that arrives on the scene-a bat, an owl, a cat, a costumed child, and a dog-adds a complicating layer until the pooch finally trips the trick-or-treater, spilling the candy, scattering the figures, and leaving the merry mouse in possession of the treats. Hatch's lively text is matched by the quirky full-color art. Using changes in perspective, an elastic line, an appropriately spooky font style, and a sure hand for depicting action, Pickering drenches the spreads in dark blues, purples, greens, and reds. Libraries looking for a slightly scary tale will want to consider this one.-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Run Read Aloud Book!

Halloween Night is Hatch's first work, and although clever, it's not original. Several others borrowed the same beat in a Halloween book, This is the House that Jack Built, well before this work was published. Though the rhythm for Halloween Night is unoriginal, the artwork is innovative. The paintings are saturated in deep hues: blues, greens, oranges, and reds, and although the illustrations are rich in color, they are not dark and creepy. The pictures are happy, and humorous, and carry wonderful comic expressions. This is a short book that's fun to read aloud, and is most appropriate for say 2 to 5 years. It takes less then a minute from cover to cover, but I like to read it with emphasis, so it takes me a bit longer. The writing flows and the word selections are appropriate for the age group. Halloween Night is a cheerful choice for the young ones.
