All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger
For the third installment in Bungie's blockbuster Halo series, composers Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori offer up a whole new world of themes, while still maintaining the orchestral, modern rock foundation of the first two volumes. This time around, the beloved "Master Chief" has been replaced by a ragtag crew of "ODST" Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, and while the objective remains the same kill or avoid the "Covenant", the action takes place primarily among humans, and as the player navigates the streets of occupied "New Mombasa," moody strings, jazzy piano, and even saxophone provide accompaniment. As the action ramps up, so does the music the back end ...

As the action ramps up, so does the music the back end of Halo 3: ODST will feel more familiar to fans than the front, but it's the early moments that set this collection of video game music apart. One doesn't require knowledge of the game to enjoy the score, as it's got an atmosphere all its own.

    Good Music - Bad CD

I will start out saying that I loved the soundtrack in Halo 3. Martin O'Donnell did a very good job on the score, and even the tracks on this disc that are remakes from the original two games sound better with live vocals/orchestra. I would recommend this soundtrack to anyone who would enjoy listening the the music of Halo 3 without having to replay through the game (although you'll probably replay it in your head whilst listening).

The media, however; leaves quite a bit to be desired. For whatever reason, when I received this from BN.com, the inner CD jewel case was damaged. I exchanged the original CD for a new one in store, and the CD case is broken in exactly the same spot. Somehow, the process that was used to package these CDs damages the cases.

I wouldn't return a CD just for that though. Pretty much all of the music that I listen to is ripped to my computer at work. I don't bother carrying around CDs ever, but I purchase them because you still can't get lossless quality audio files over the internet. On both of the CDs that I got, the first disc generates a whole slew of read errors starting in track 12. It is so bad that 3 different audio ripping programs cannot extract the audio from the CD. I suppose that I could just keep the one CD at work, but I can't play it either. Starting in track 12, the CD skips to a grinding halt. For whatever reason, both discs played just fine in a regular CD player, but unless I want to bring in equalizer equipment to hook up prior to my speakers, the basic CD player audio just isn't the same.

Once again, I love the music on this item. I just hate the CD. Hopefully I can get this to work, but I've already invested 8 hours in workarounds with no luck.

Halo 3 Soundtrack was a good CD

The Halo 3 soundtrack was a good deal for my money, since it has 2 disks with 31 songs total. Of course this CD was not really appropriate for dancing. It has good songs from classic Halo 3 moments, so if you love Halo 3 or any of the trilogy, I recommend this CD for you!

The culmintation of an amazing series of soundtracks.

When Halo first came out, the musical score was unanimously recognized as an impressive achievement. Now that we have Halo 3 it is evident that the soundtrack has been honed to perfection. Halo music has a singular mood and feel to it. Ranging from symphonic string scores to poignant piano pieces, this soundtrack actualizes the very soul of Halo - giving voice to those points which are otherwise inexpressible. Even if you are not a fan of Halo if you enjoy listening to soundtracks, or have a penchant for fine string music, this is an excellent album to buy.
